ARCHBISHOPS. 115 York nth April 1570; he received the royal assent 1 6th May following^^, on the 22nd of which month he was confirmed at Canterbury. The temporalities of the see were restored to him 6th June ^^. He was elected to Canterbury loth Jan. 1575—6. The royal license for the election of a successor to archbishop Grindal issued 19th Jan. 1576-7 ^ pursuant to which, 1577 Edwix Sands or Sandys, bishop of London., was elected iQEliz. to the metropolitan see of York 25th Jan 1576—7^-^ and the Queen's assent was given to his election 8th March ^•^, on which day he also obtained the arch- bishop's confirmation^'. He was enthroned by proxy on the 13th, and the temporalities were restored to him on the 16th of the same month ^ He died at Southwell loth July 1588^^, and was there buried. His will is in the Prerogative Office, London. A conge d'elire, vice archbishop Sands, issued 18th Jan. 1588-9. 1589 John Piers, hisJiop of Salisbury^ was elected ist Feb. 3iEliz. 1^88-9, received the royal assent on the 15th, and was confirmed on the 19th */■, and enthroned by proxy on the 27th of the same month^^. The temporahties were restored to him 22nd March. He died at Eishopsthorp 28th Sept. 1594^^, and was buried in York cathedral.
