DEANS. If21 Roger de Insula was dean of York in 1221 and in 1226^8. He died in 123599. Geoffrey OF Norwich possessed it in 1235^ He died in 1 239. FuLCo Basset succeeded to this deanery in Oct. 1239'-^ and in 1242 he was made bishop of London. William de Kirkham held this office xi Cal. Jul. (21st June) 12443. Walter de Kirkham from this dignity was made bishop of Durham in 1248^^. Sewall de Bovill succeeded in 1240^. In 1256 he was elected archbishop of this see^. Jordan was intruded into this deanery by papal au- thority in 1256, but forced to quit it in 1257". Godfrey de Ludham succeeded Sewall in this deanery in 1 256 8, and in 1258 he succeeded him likewise in this archbishopric 9. RoGER^o de Holderness was instituted in 1258 ^^ William de Langton alias de Ruderfeld^'^, from this dignity was elected archbishop of this diocese in 1265, but was set avside by the Pope. In 1278 he was elected bishop of Carlisle, but refused it. He died dean of York 15th July 1279 ^3.
