DEANS. 123 his will on Wednesday next after the feast of St. Leonard i^^6. William la Zouche was admitted 12th Nov. 1336, and made his profession of obedience to the arch- bishop 29th June 1338^7. In 1340 he was elected archbishop of this see. Thomas Sampson was elected by the canons 2nd Nov. 134228 • but the election was made void by the Pope in favour of Talykandus de Petragoricis, bishop of ^^ Alhanen!^ and a Roman cardinal^ who, by the title of St. Peter ad Vincula, was admitted to this dignity by the archbi- shop 1 8th March 1343 by papal provision -9; the King however nominated John de Offord 28th June 1343^0, but he was not admitted by the chapter. After much strife the King recovered the right of presentation, which had accrued to him during the vacancy of the see, and nominated Philip de Weston, his chaplain, 20th March 134731. After some delay, the arch- bishop, 26th Aug. 1347, commanded the chapter to admit Weston, but the Pope and the chapter oppos- ing it, Talyrandus kept possession of it till his death, which happened 17th Jan. 1363^2, John Anglicus, another Roman cardinal^ was provided by the Pope after the death of Talyrandus, and ad- mitted to this deanery by the archbishop nth Nov. 1366-^ ^ He was deprived by the Pope 1st May 1381-^4. Adam, a Roman cardinal likewise^ by the title of St. Cecilia, by papal provision was admitted to this dig- nity 7th March 1381-82; and he likewise was de- prived by the Pope 5th June 1385-^^. ^ Reg.
