124 YORK. Edmund Stafford, LL.D., was admitted i2th Aug. 1385'^^, and in 1395 ho was made bishop of Exeter. Roger Walden succeeded in 1395, and in 1397 was elected archbishop of Canterbury. RicTiARD Clifford was elected to this dignity 26th March 1397—8^', installed on the 28th of the same month ^'^, and in 1401 he was made bishop of Wor- cester. Thomas Longley was confirmed in this dignity by the archbishop at Scroby 20th Jan. 1401-2, installed by proxy on the 25th of the same month, and in person 8th Aug. 1403-^^. In 1405 he was elected archbishop of this see, and had the King's consent 8th Aug. But this election was set aside by the Pope, and in 1406 he was made bishop of Durham. John Prophete was installed by his proxy 20th April 1407, and in person 24th March 1409-10. He made his profession of obedience to the archbishop on the 26t]i of the same month '^. He was keeper of the privy 8cal'^ His will, dated 8th April 1416, was proved 14th May following. Thomas Polton, LL.15., was elected 23rd July 14 16, and made his profession of obedience to the archbishop 3rd Aug.^^ In 1420 he was made bishop of Hereford. AViLLiAM Grey, LL.D., was confirmed in this dignity by the archbishop 31st March 1421, and installed 5th April following^'.
