He was deprived in i^^f), died shortly afterwards 1^, and was buried in the church of St. Dunstan in the West, London. He died 22nd May 1570, and was buried in Carlisle cathedral. The license to elect a bishop in the room of John Best is dated 14th June 1570-1, in pursuance of which 1570 Richard Barnes, suffragan bishop of Nottingham-', 12 Eiiz. was elected to the see of Carlisle 25th June 1570, and received the royal assent 13th July 23; the temporal- ities were restored to him on the 26th of the same month*2*. In May 1577 he was translated to Dur- ham.
