304 DURHAM. John Kempe from this dignity was made bishop of Rochester in 1419^ Robert Gilbert, ist March 1420^. William le Scroope died possessed of this dignity 22nd May 1463, and was buried in the cathedral at Yorlc^ Ralph Bothe held it in 1463. Roger Leyborxe held the dignity in 1499 and 1504. John Boernius or Boerius Genensis was intruded into this dignity by the Pope^ and was ejected from it in 1515. William Franklin, S.T.B., succeeded in J 515, and held it till his death in 15.55. Bernard Gilpin, S.T.B., had this dignity conferred on him by bishop Tunstall in 1556. In 1560 he was nominated by the Queen to the bishopric of Carlisle, but refused it. He resigned this archdeaconry in the same year; died 4th March 1583, aetat. 66, and was buried in the church of Houghton in the Spring, in the county palatine of Durham, of which parish he was rector. John Ebden, S.T.B., had this dignity conferred on him by the Queen, in the vacancy of the see, 22 nd May 1560*. He resigned it in 1562. John Pilkington, S.T.B., was collated 6th Dec. 1562 : void by the resignation of Ebden. He died in 1603 ' and was succeeded by William Morton, S.T.B., who was collated 19th Nov. 1603, and died i8th July 1621. Gabriel Clark, S.T.P., was collated nth Oct. 1621 : void by the death of Morton. Ho died loth May 1662. Dennis Grexvtle or Greenville, S.T. P., was col- lated 19th Sept. 1662 : void by the death of Gabriel Clark ^. In 1684 he was made dean of this church, but held this with it. 1 Angl.
