DEANS. 349 John Earle, S.T.P., clerk of the closet^ was made dean of Westminster 14th June 1660, and 30th Nov. 1662 he was consecrated bishop of Worcester. John Dolbex, S.T.P., archdeacon of London^ was in- stalled 3rd Dec. 1662. In Nov. 1666 he was made bishop of Eochester, but held this deanery in com- mendam with it until Aug. 1683, when he was trans- lated to York. Thomas Spratt, S.T.P., succeeded in 1683, and 2nd Nov. 1684 he was consecrated bishop of Rochester, and held them both together till his death, which hap- pened 20th May 17 13, 86 tat. 77. He was buried in the abbey. Francis Atterbury, S.T.P., dean of Christ Church^wsiS nominated loth June, and installed i6th June 17 13, vice Thomas Spratt ; he very soon after was conse- crated bishop of Rochester, and held this deanery in commendam till he was deprived. Samuel Bradford, bishop of Carlisle, installed 7th June 1723. Ob. 17th May 173 1. Joseph WiLcocKS, bishop of Gloucester, installed 21st June 1731. Zachariah Pearce, bishop of Bangor , nominated dean of Westminster 15th April 1756. John Thomas, S.T.P., 1768. He became bishop of Rochester in 1774. Ob. 22nd Aug. J 793. Samuel Horsley, S.T.P., succeeded Dr. Thomas in the bishopric of Rochester and the deanery of West- minster. On the translation of Dr. Horsley to the see of St. Asaph in 1 802. William Vincent, S.T.P., headmaster of Westminster school, succeeded in 1802. He died 21st Dec. 1815. John Ireland, 30th Dec. 1815, vice Dr. William Vin- cent deceased. Ob. 21st Sept. 1842. Thomas Turton, nominated loth Oct. 1842, vice Dr. John Ireland deceased. Samuel Wilberforce, nominated 5th May 1845, vice Dr. Thomas Turton promoted to the see of Ely.
