In 1876 he invented the telephone; and subsequently the photophone, induction balance, and telephone probe for painless detection of bullets in the human body. He is president of the American association to promote teaching of speech of the deaf; president of the national geographical society; and is regent of the Smithsonian institution. He is the author of numerous scientific and educational monographs. His father, Alexander Melville Bell, born in 1819, was for many years a noted professor of elocution; and now resides with his son in Washington, D.C. In 1896 he was a presidential elector on the McKinley ticket; and in 1901-02 was commissioner and treasurer of the Missouri commission to the Pan-American and Charleston expositions.
