Brooke, Francis J., soldier, lawyer, jurist, was born Aug. 27, 1763, in Smithfield, Va. In 1780 he joined Harrison's regiment of artillery as lieutenant; afterward joined Greene's army; and served until the end of the civil war. He was elected to the state house of delegates in 1794; and in 1800 was chosen to the state senate, becoming its speaker. In 1804-11 he was a judge of the general court; and in 1811-51 was a judge of the court of appeals, of which he was president for eight years. He died March 3, 1851, in Fredericksburg, Va. Brooke, Francis Key, clergyman, bishop, was bom Nov. 2, 1852, in Gambler, Ohio. He served successively at College Hill, Portsmouth, Piqua and Sandusky, Ohio. He was rector of St. Peter's church of St. Louis in 1886-88; and in 1888-92 at Atchison, Kan. In 1893 he was consecrated missionary bishop of Oklahoma and Indian Territory. is

Brooke, George Mercer, soldier, was born In 1814 he was brevetted lieutenant-colonel for gallant conduct in the defense of Fort Erie; and in 1814 was brevetted colonel for distinguished services in the sortie from Fort Erie. He was brevetted brigadier-general in 1824; and was brevetted major-general in 1848. He died March 9, 1851, in San Antonio, Texas. in Virginia.

Brooke, St. George Tucker, soldier, eduauthor, was born July 22, 1844, at the University of Virginia. In 1861-62 he was a midshipman in the confederate states navy; and then served as a private soldier in the confederate states army until the close of the civil war. Since 1878 he has been professor of law at the college of law of the West Virginia university. He is the author of Common Law Practice and Pleading in West Virginia. Brooke, Thomas Preston, musician, composer, was born June 7, 1859, in Leavenworth, Kas. Since 1893 he has conducted the Chicago marine band. Among the best known of his compositions are Columbia Guards March; March of the First; Popular Swing Two-step; Louisiana Buck Dance; and Our Nation's Guard March. Brooke, Walter, lawyer. United States senator, was born Dec. 13, 1813, in Virginia. For two years he taught school in Kentucky; and then began the practice of law in Lexington, Ky. He was United States senator from Mississippi in 1852-53 to fill a. vacancy. He took part in the civil war. He died Feb. 19, 1869, in Vicksburg, Miss.
