LL.D. ; made Judge of the Marshal-Court IXJ 17 Sep. 1597 ; Master in Chancery [I.], S Nov. 1598 ; was knighted by the Lord Deputy [I.] at Christchurch, Dublin, 25 Dec. 1604 ; Lord Chancellor [I.], 13 May 1619, being raised to the peerage, as above stated, three years later and beiug continued iu his post as Chancellor (by'the new King) 11 April 1625, till his removal therefrom 25 May 1638, for " misdemeanours and irregularities " He was also three times one of the Chief Governors of Ireland as joint Lord Justice, dic, 1622-25, 1629-33, and finally 1636. He signed the proclamation, 23 Oct. 1641, notifying the discovery of the Irish rebellion, by which having lost "to the value of £8,330 and £2,106 a year"( b ) he quitted that kingdom. He m. in 1597 Sarah, widow of Richard Meredyth, Bishop of Leighlin (1589-96), da. of ( — ) Bathow. He d. at Middleham, co. Easter Day, 11 April 1680, in his 82d year-, was bur. 22d at Monasterevan. His widow d. 14 Nov. 1684, and was also bur. there. Her will dat. 27 Oct., pr. 23 Nov. 1684, in Dublin. III. 1680, 5. Arthur (Loftus), Viscount Loftus of Ely ILJ, to only s. and h. 6. 1744. He m. firstly Douglas, da. and coheir of 1725. William Savage, of Castle Rhebau, co. Kildare. She d. s.p. and was bur, at Monasterevan. He in. secondly, in 1676, Anne, widow of Sir Andrew Owens, da. of William HAWKINS. She d. 17 March 1702, and was bur. in her father's vault, at St. Werburgh's, Dublin. He m. thirdly, 2 April 1702, Letitia, da. of Sir John Rowley, of Castle Roe, co. Derry, by Mary, 1st da. and coheir of Sir Hercules Langford. He d. s.p.rn.s., 6 Nov. 1725, in his 82d year, and was bur. the 16th, at Monasterevan, when the Viscountcy became cxtinct.( A ) His widow m. (as his 2d wife) Nicholas (Loftus), 1st Viscount' Loftus of Ely [I.], who d. 31 Dec. 1763, aged 76. She d. s.p. 19 July, 1765, at Summer Hill, co. Meath. ( a ) There is no preamble to the patent ; that to the privy seal (dat. at Westm. 23 April 1622) is given in " Lodge," vol. vii, p. 247. The privy seal directs the title to " descend upon his posterity, that thereby his virtues may be recorded to future ages, so long as there shall remain an heir male of his house."
