Zora Montgomery Courtney (1882-1962) was born in Peoria, Illinois and attended Knox College in Galesburg, Illinois. She married Herme Francis Hahnen (1880-1911) on 26 June 1901 in Galesburg and he died in 1911 of appendicitis. He left an insurance payout of $9,000 in a trust fund for his children. In 1912 Zora married Earl Leroy Krell (1890-1955). Earl Leroy Krell mismanaged the money in the children's trust fund, and they divorced in 1915. Her death. "Services for Mrs. Zora M. Hahnen, 80, of 732 Eighteenth street, who died Sunday after suffering a heart attack at her home, will be at 3 p.m. Tuesday at St. Paul's Episcopal Church. The body will be cremated. Mrs. Hahnen was born in Peoria, Illinois, and lived here 46 years. She had attended Knox College at Galesburg, Illinois, and was a member of St. Paul's Church and Guild. Surviving are a daughter, Mrs. Grant A. Black of Goldsboro, North Carolina; a son, Robert C. Hahnen of St. Paul, Minnesota; two grandsons and three great-grand-children. The body is at the Dunn Funeral Home."
Republican committeewoman. "The enclosed picture is of my mom, who visited us in February for a month and my present husband, and I might add, my last, come what may. She is still full of life and vinegar and can drink me under the table despite the fact I am 20 years younger than she. Three years ago she ran for Republican committeewoman in her district, and won! She was 71 last January. We had a wonderful time when she was here, and she and Grant immediately became buddies. Though I have had two marriages end in tragedy, I am hoping this will last a long time."
New York City back to Des Moines. "Mrs. Zora Hahnen of New York City has returned to make her home in Des Moines and is living at 2818 Ingersoll avenue. Before coming here she visited in Mission, Kansas, with her son-in-law and daughter, Lieutenant, and Mrs. H. L. Gray."
"Mrs. Zora Hahnen, 2818 Ingersoll avenue, Saturday announced purchase of the Lucretia Gift Shop, 218 Eighth street, and will operate it under that name. Mrs. Hahnen formerly was associated with Mrs. Lucretia Hayden, founder of the shop, and at one time was in the gift department of Wannamakers department store at New York, New York. She purchased the shop here from Mrs. Elton Ellis and Elton Ellis, Jr., July 1. The shop soon will be redecorated and its name may later be changed to 'Zora's.' Mrs. Hahnen said she will continue to handle several lines of unusual and exclusive import gift articles, including rare Holland pottery, Belgian Madonna figures, copper and other metal art objects, gift, birthday and greeting cards, and other gift lines."
Marriage of her daughter. "Mrs. Schneider is the daughter of Mrs. Zora M. Hahnen, of Jersey City and Des Moines, Iowa."
Marriage of her daughter. "Cards have been received here from Mrs. Zora Montgomery Hahnen of Jersey City, New Jersey, formerly of Des Moines, Iowa, announcing the marriage of her daughter, Gretchen Frances, to Eddie August Henry Schneider which took place June 2 in New York City, New York."
Third marriage. "Mrs. Zora Hahnen, former resident, and Lemuel Rockwell of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, were married yesterday morning at the Church of the Redeemer at Minneapolis, according to word received here. Mrs. Hahnen has been residing in Minneapolis for the last five years."
Mismanagement of her children's trust fund. "The guardian whose accounts are under investigation was formerly Mrs. Zora M. Hahnen, the widow of H, F. Hahnen, who died in February, 1911, leaving surviving him such widow and their two minor children, Gretchen and Robert, aged respectively eleven and five years. $9,000 came into the hands of the guardian as the proceeds of a life insurance policy in favor of the children. In March, 1911, she was appointed guardian, her bond being fixed at $9,000. …"
Divorce from her second husband. "Zora Hahnen-Krell was granted an absolute divorce from Earl Krell by Judge Hubert Utterback of the district court yesterday. She charged her husband with cruelty. The decree gives Mrs. Krell the custody of her two children by a former marriage and permanent alimony of $360 a year. The pair was [sic] married on April 3, 1912."
Divorce from her second husband. "Zora Hahnen-Krell yesterday applied to the district court for a divorce from Earl Krell, charging cruel and inhuman treatment. They were married on April 3, 1912. Mrs. Krell asks permanent alimony of $50. Several weeks ago Mrs. Krell was cited to appear before Judge Brennan to answer charges that she, had dissipated funds left to her children by her first husband, H. F. Hahnen, a bank clerk. One of the charges against her was that she had loaned Krell money belonging to the children without security."
Mismanagement of her children's trust fund. "Mrs. Zora Krell was before Judge Hugh Brennan of the district court this morning to explain her doings while guardian of her two children, Gretchen and Robert Hahnen. They were left approximately $9,000 by their father, the late H. F. Hahnen. The Des Moines Savings bank, which is now guardian for the children charges that their mother dissipated their funds."
Mismanagement of her children's trust fund. "Mrs. Zora Krell, former wife of the H. F. Hahnen, an employee of the Iowa National bank, was ordered by Judge Hugh Brennan, this morning, to appear in court on October 6 for an examination as to her doings as guardian of her two children, Gretchen and Robert Hahnen, aged 9 and 4 years, respectively."
Death of her husband at age 31. "Herme F. Hahnen, 31 years old, chief clerk of the Iowa National bank, and a leader among the younger men in the banking circles of Des Moines, died at 7:10 o'clock Sunday morning at Mercy hospital of appendicitis followed by peritonitis. He was taken ill on Monday, February 13, and his case was critical from the beginning. Upon his removal to the hospital, the following Tuesday an operation was performed but his ailment was far advanced, and his life hung by a thread. Mr. Hahnen, who was born in Des Moines February 15, 1880, leaves a wife, who, before her marriage, was Miss Zora Courtney of Galesburg, Illinois, and two children, Gretchen, 9 years old, and Robert, 4 years old. He was married nine years ago. …"
