Trudging Old Man

Hakushū Kitahara

The moon’s in the east
And the sun’s in the west,
And the trudging old man
On the hill there goes.

A red, red cap
And a bamboo stick;
And the basket on his back
With lilies is packed.

The trudging old man
Is big, isn’t he?
His shadow’s so long—
As long as could be.

The hills are rolling,
The grassy hills;
He comes down
And then he goes up.

The moon’s in the east
And the sun’s in the west,
And the trudging old man,
Hōi, yohōi!
