Translation:Mishnah/Seder Moed/Tractate Eruvin/Chapter 1/4

From Wikisource

Introduction

[edit]

This is a continuation of the previous mishnah, which began the discussion of the minimal physical dimensions of a korah by saying that a korah had to be at least one tefach wide.

Hebrew Text

[edit]
רחבה כדי לקבל אריח,
ובריאה כדי לקבל אריח.
רבי יהודה אומר, רחבה אף על פי שאין בריאה.

English Translation

[edit]
edit
It [the beam] must be wide enought to hold an ariah and strong enough to hold an ariah.
Rabbi Yehuda says it [the beam] must be wide enough, but it doesn't have to be strong enough [to hold an ariah].

Explanation

[edit]

The previous mishnah stated that a korah had to be wide enough to hold an ariah (a half brick). This mishnah will begin the discussion on whether or not it is necesary for the korah to be strong enough to hold an ariah.
