Wikisource format

Before investing heavily, please consider familiarizing yourself with Wikisource style, and how it differs (a great deal) from Wikipedia. In particular, we do not use lists of "External links". --EncycloPetey (talk) 02:43, 26 December 2018 (UTC)

If you are serious (and you seem so), I would urge you to consider creating a Wikiproject hub to organize materials and style for the Wikisource translation of the Bible. There are various parts of the translation edited intermittently, but no central organizing page, style guide, or list of references. There is a Translation guidelines section, but I'll start to incorporate a style guide, per your suggestion, including some of the bits you've provided for me above (e.g., exclusion of "External links", etc.). Austinjalexander (talk) 04:33, 26 December 2018 (UTC)

While we have a had a few active Hebrew translations working primarily with the Pentateuch, I can't recall the last time I saw someone editing New Testament books. So there may be a fair bit you can contribute towards translation style and resources for the books that were written in Greek. --EncycloPetey (talk) 04:42, 26 December 2018 (UTC)

Yes, I'm looking forward to it! FWIW, I'll also spend some time on the Hebrew portions. And, since it wasn't obvious to either of us that a Wikiproject already existed, I'm thinking of suggesting that we add {{WikiBible}} to individual book pages.

Hello. I'm Alephb, and I've been contributing a bit on Hebrew portions. I can't read Greek to save my life, so I'm glad to see a New Testament contributor. Anything I've done so far on the Hebrew portions is very much "rough draft" sorts of material -- I've been focusing more on adding things, as we're over ten years into the project and large portions are still untranslated, than on fixing problems in things that already exist. So an extra pair of eyes is appreciated. There are large portions in the Hebrew sections that haven't been translated by me, as well, and work is also needed on those portions. An enormous quantity of work, and I've not been moving very fast. Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, and Numbers, if I remember right, are in their current form the work of an editor who last contributed over a year ago. I've done the bulk of Deuteronomy, Joshua, Judges, 1 and 2 Samuel, 1 and 2 Kings, 1 Chronicles, Nehemiah, Esther, the bulk of the Hebrew parts of Daniel, and 2 Chronicles which I'm working through now. Any and all of those could use additional work. I don't have the foggiest notion what's going on with the NT. If you can find someone competent in Aramaic, the project might get finished one day. On the contrary, it sounds like you've made fantastic progress! I'm going to spend some time getting familiar with the docs/discussions and texts already posted and adding more in terms of guidelines. And, I can work my way through some Aramaic, but, FWIW, I'm thinking of this as more of a lifelong-labor-of-love-kind-of-thing; a collaborative, digital, wiki-based, modern translation of complicated texts like the Hebrew Bible and Greek New Testament can really never be "done," but I think we can achieve some amazing project goals together! Over time, I'll also make an effort to encourage more folks to join the endeavor!  :)

Wikisource formatting, continued

I have corrected Page:Westcott and Hort The New Testament in the Original Greek 1881 American Edition.djvu/94 Page:The New Testament in the original Greek - 1881.djvu/96 to comply with Wikisource formatting and style guidelines. You can refer to it as an example for future work. In particular, we do not preserve elements such as page-width, fonts, indents, and line breaks. The default styling of the print medium is replaced with the default styling of the digital medium. Index:Westcott and Hort The New Testament in the Original Greek 1881 American Edition.djvu

Speaking of Westcott and Hort, is there any difference between the edition that you uploaded, and our existing copy at Index:The New Testament in the original Greek - 1881.djvu? It's worth noting that this text is shared between English Wikisource and Greek Wikisource, with the Greek content being proofread at el:Βιβλίο:The New Testament in the original Greek - 1881.djvu. —Beleg Tâl (talk) 21:28, 14 January 2019 (UTC)

@Beleg Tâl: Yikes! I really did search before taking the trouble to set this up, but I clearly should have done a more targeted search (prob using the advanced parameters). However, I'm thrilled to learn about the connection between the Eng and Grk Wikisource's though! {{iwpage|en}}, for example, is an awesome tag!

OK, so, I have two questions:

1. What's up with the note on the Eng version you shared re: deletion?
2. Should I start migrating our work from here over to there and mark this one for deletion?

1. The deletion proposal was related to the fact that this is not an English text, and English Wikisource only keeps English texts. We decided to keep the English parts and put the Greek parts on Greek Wikisource, but we forgot to remove the deletion notice — I have removed it now.
2. I've moved the three proofread pages. You might want to move page 184; have a look at the existing formatting for the text on Greek Wikisource and try to match it. The rest can be safely deleted, which I will take care of when I have a chance.

@Beleg Tâl: I'm noticing in the other version of WH that was already started, the margin notes are missing (e.g., see this page). For a critical edition of a text, these notes are critical. :) What would be the proper Wikisource way to include them? Thank you! --Austinjalexander (talk) 07:54, 16 January 2019 (UTC)

@Austinjalexander: I think the best way to handle margin notes is to use {{sidenotes begin}} and related templates. I see that these templates also exist on Greek Wikisource so this should be acceptable there also. Greek Wikisource has different formatting conventions from English Wikisource, so take my advise with a grain of salt. You can ask advice regarding Greek Wikisource conventions at el:Βικιθήκη:Γραμματεία, though I don't know if you will get much of a response there. Here on English Wikisource we can help if you run into trouble with making the templates work properly, since we are a more active community and the software is pretty much the same on both Wikisources. —Beleg Tâl (talk) 14:06, 16 January 2019 (UTC)

I've proofread el:Σελίδα:The New Testament in the original Greek - 1881.djvu/170 so you can see how it works. You might see that the margin notes are sitting on top of the picture of the scanned page; this is acceptable in the page-editing setting and will not be an issue when the text is transcluded into the main work. I've also flipped the margins, so that verses will be on the left and notes will be on the right for both recto and verso pages. Finally, I also added in the textual markings that are documented at Page:The New Testament in the original Greek - 1881.djvu/96. —Beleg Tâl (talk) 14:32, 16 January 2019 (UTC)
