Patrolled edits

[edit]

Hi, Dovi,

Since we recently enabled patrolled edits on this wiki, and since you are an administrator (and no one here needs to check your edits to make sure you're not vandalizing pages), I'd like to inform you that under "Preferences" > "Editing" you can check a box that automatically marks all of your edits as patrolled. That way, in the Recent changes, no red "!" will appear by your edits.—Zhaladshar (Talk) 19:32, 4 May 2006 (UTC)Reply

Done, thanks! Dovi 19:35, 4 May 2006 (UTC)Reply

ParserFunctions used for section transclusion

[edit]

Hello Dovi. Regarding bug 5881, please see my demonstration of Zoran Obradovic's suggestion at User:Pathoschild/Sandbox2, which transcludes section #2 of User:Pathoschild/Sandbox. Note that there are several limitations to this: the contents of the page will be hidden on the page itself, since the parameter is not specified. This can be circumvented with some clever programming, but it's tedious and messy. Another limitation is that the pipe is used as a seperator in the ParserFunctions, so any pipe in the page will have to be escape with {{!}}. For more information on ParserFunctions, see m:ParserFunctions. // [admin] Pathoschild (talk/map) 15:10, 9 May 2006 (UTC)Reply

ParserFunctions

[edit]

I've had a look at the suggestions, but I haven't yet formed a concrete idea on it... There are a lot of pros and a lot of cons in either direction. It would be useful, but I think that putting verses on seperate pages, then transcluding into chapters, then transcluding upwards into books, would be a lot easier, a lot more simple... Of course, there are some negative points to that sort of transclusion... Jude (talk, contribs, email) 11:17, 10 May 2006 (UTC)Reply

Single Page View

[edit]

Thank you for your comments, and please do go ahead with any necessary tinkering to add an additional option for single page view, that would be great. I would think then that option could just be added to the header page at Epistle to Yemen, yes? My next ambitious project by the way is a 1946 translation of Rabbi Joseph Albo's Sefer ha-Ikkarim, a bit longer than Epistle to Yemen... : ) MPerel 23:26, 23 May 2006 (UTC)Reply

On the <p></p>, on Wikipedia at least, they served to break up paragraphs (see w:Judaism's view of Jesus for example). Now that I think about it though, it was really only necessary within a <blockquote></blockquote>. I think they can just be removed...I'll go do that. Also, currently I've put the Notes on each page where it is referenced, as it is in the book, but I can move all the Notes to one page at the end if you think having it on separate pages might interfere with transclusion.MPerel 06:37, 24 May 2006 (UTC)Reply
I went ahead and tried your original suggestion to make this a single page view in the first place. I created a new version here at my Sandbox. Tell me what you think, should I just replace the existing version with this? Feel free to tweak this or the other version. I really appreciate all your help and advice with this : ) MPerel 20:32, 24 May 2006 (UTC)Reply

Book of Principles

[edit]

I'll definitely take up your suggestion to load the text according to Albo's chapters, and if you already have a few chapters typed and proofread, that's fantastic, let's put it in. I'm waiting for the Husik edition to arrive in a few days (I recently ordered it from an antique book store). On the copyright, my initial research shows it has fallen into public domain, but I intend to get verification in writing from JPS before I embark too far on this.

I like your suggestion to upload the book as images to Commons, maybe I'll do that first, then it will have the Hebrew as well, and plus others (like you and others interested) can help get the text into here. I don't see any books in Commons though, is it appropriate to load a whole book of images there? As far as entering the text, I suppose I was planning to do it the old fashioned way (typing). However, if I can find a decent OCR program I may go that route. I've tried OCR before with not much luck (it seemed it took a lot of effort to correct errors), but maybe there is better software out there. MPerel 06:37, 24 May 2006 (UTC)Reply

:-) I've actually requested a bot flag for my other account, User:Xenophon (bot), over at the Scriptorium because I feel a little guilty at the speed I've been making the changes. I've got some 1400 Emily Dickinson poems left to do, along with moving them to their correct titles (using — instead of --), and then correcting the dashes in them... Whee, lots of fun things to do! Transclution patch

[edit]

I talked to brion on IRC the other day. He is willing to look at labeled section tranclution when a patch is uploaded. He also brought it to the attention of the mediawiki chat room that it needed to be worked on, but I don't know if anyone was interested. If you know anyone interested in this who is capable of actually writing the patch, try and encourage them. If you can let me know when something is actually uploaded at bugzilla, I will try to nicely bug brion about evaluating it. He said if no one else writes he will try to get to it himself but I imagine that could be a long time. That is my memory of the conversation so I hope I am not misrepresenting what he said here!--BirgitteSB 12:18, 6 July 2006 (UTC)Reply

Mishnah

[edit]

I've contacted Dr. Morton Siegel from the USCJ regarding using the text of Mishnah Yomit for the Open Mishnah Project to help streamline some of the translation process. He requested that we get something in writing on Wikimedia letterhead if we would like to license it. Do you know if there anyone I could contact about that? Karimarie 17:39, 28 September 2006 (UTC)Reply

I think that is a very nice idea. As to writing an official letter on Wikimedia stationary, I don't know a great deal about these things, but I do know who does: I suggest contacting User:Danny about this. He does professional work with organizations, is an official employee of the Wikimedia Foundation, and is active here at Wikisource (including on the Mishnah project). If anyone would know how to go about drafting a letter like this and making it effective, it would be him. Dovi 21:11, 28 September 2006 (UTC)Reply

Can you fix this?

[edit]

Since you are an admin, are you able to (please) fix the mix-up I made between Mishnah/Seder Zeraim/Tractate Berakhot/Chapter 1/5/Translation and Mishnah/Seder Zeraim/Tractate Berakhot/Chapter 1/4/Translation when moving the two pages? Everything on the pages is correct right now - they are just in the wrong locations... Thanks. --Eliyak T·C 04:27, 24 October 2006 (UTC)Reply

(Right now the correct translations are showing up on the mishnah pages, since the redirects are also switched.) --Eliyak T·C 04:36, 24 October 2006 (UTC)Reply
I simply cut and pasted the text to reverse them... Dovi 08:11, 24 October 2006 (UTC)
The reason I asked is that it is usually considered correct to keep the history pages intact. If you think this is fine, I'm not going to complain. --Eliyak T·C 19:38, 24 October 2006 (UTC)Reply
True enough. But to delete one page to move another there would have removed that history too. (Although then I guess the history could have been undeleted?) This seemed the most straightforward. Dovi 03:42, 25 October 2006 (UTC)Reply

[edit]

Thanks for your documentation cleanups and glowing review on the mailing list. Now that we have a working extension, we should be able to get the developers to add it to the SVN so it will be available for Wikimedia projects. So I think that kind of advocacy and some feedback from the developers is what we need now to move this forward. -Steve Sanbeg 21:00, 13 November 2006 (UTC)Reply

Wikisource Special Characters Drop-Down Menu in the Editor

[edit]

Dovi,

Longtime no speak. I'm glad you made it through the war in one piece. I have been absent from Wikisource for a while. I just posted another document: the Life of Abraham Lincoln (Little Blue Book Ten Cent Pocket Series No. 324), something I pulled from Project Gutenberg. I think it was while posting that work that I noticed the new Wikisource Special Characters Drop-Down Menu in the Editor (the drop-down that with the word "select", beneath the submit button). I am using the MediaWiki software for a multilingual project I am working on—it could really benefit from this feature. Where do I go to get that extension, and installation instructions? If you don't know, who would?

On another note, how is the Open Mishna project coming along? Is anyone working on the Gemara as well?

Thanks,
B"H

It is funny you left me that message today because I was just bugging brion about that Tuesday, which has been first day of having internet acces at home in some time. I think we should just focus on the one at this time however.--BirgitteSB 17:36, 1 February 2007 (UTC)Reply

DynamicPageList extension

[edit]

I got the impression that you are interested in extensions which allow cross referencing, content transclusion etc. So you may be interested to have a look at the latest version of DynamicPageList. I recently put some work in making DPL even better than it was up to now. I would be happy to make DPL part of mediawiki or wikipedia installations. Is there a "promotion process" for this?

It would be nice if you could answer on my user page at the dpldemo web site. Thanks, -- Gero 84.59.13.38 13:45, 17 February 2007 (UTC)Reply

Help with Hebrew Works

[edit]

Dovi,

Before I begin, I must say I was inspired by the OpenMishnah Project to start a WS project of my own: Salvation of Israel Project is for public domain texts by/about/useful to Messianic-Judaism and Hebrew-Christianity. As a hobby of sorts, I collect the writings (mostly from but not limited to the Haskalah period) of Jewish believers in Yeshua/Jesus. I have scans of the writings of Rabbi Jehiel Lichtenstein, completely in the original Hebrew. What I have is a relatively short commentary on the Brit Chadeshah (New Testament). Do you know anyone in he:wikisource who might be interested in preserving this work there? Also, do you know anyone who might take a stab at translating them into English for the benefit of my project and en:wikisource at large? My grasp of Hebrew at this time is insufficient for that task. Lastly, I have some writings, in German, by another Rabbi (Isaac Lichtenstein) on various subjects. Do you know anyone on German wikisource who might post the writings there and render similar assistance with those works? I hope you can point me in the direction of some help. I have some other Hebrew works besides this as well, which he:wikisource might find useful. I'm glad you made it through the war in one piece [you are in one piece, are you not? :-)] Have a good Pasach, I hope to hear from you soon. Thanks! —Wikijeff 05:30, 4 April 2007 (UTC)Reply

Hi. Scans by themselves are not of immediate use to Wikisource, unless there is a plan to use OCR or transcribe them by hand (even if your Hebrew isn't good enough to do translations, maybe you could do transcriptions). But they can be uploaded to the Commons (for that future purpose), as I too have done with a couple of texts. Unfortunately, OCR for Hebrew isn't very good (you might have better luck with that in German). So far there is very little Christian literature at he-WS, just one NT book that someone cut and pasted, but you are certainly free to add more. The war notice is obviously obsolete ;-) Dovi 20:52, 10 April 2007 (UTC)Reply

JPS 1917

[edit]

Dovi,

I see that you contributed the text of Song of Songs to the Bible (Jewish Publication Society 1917). According to your note in the Wikisource history, you pulled the text from http://www.mechon-mamre.org. However, it should be noted that http://www.mechon-mamre.org is not an unaltered JPS text. According to http://www.sacred-texts.com/faq.htm#jps the JPS text at http://www.mechon-mamre.org has been changed in a number of places in order to support the (dubious) claim of a new copyright. (See the 2002 copyright notices on Mechron Mamre). An incomplete but (allegedly) reliable text of the JPS 1917 texts is available at http://www.sacred-texts.com/bib/jps/index.htm. Perhaps comparing the two electronic texts with Unix diff with physical copy of the 1917 is in order. In fact, if you have access to a JPS 1917, scanning it and posting it on WM:Commons might not be a bad idea as well. I'd like your input on this. —Wikijeff 20:54, 24 June 2007 (UTC)Reply

Hi. According to Mechon Mamre, the only changes they made were to remove paragraph divisions, and insert the traditional Hebrew parashah divisions. These are things that no copyright adheres to. They claim rights to "this HTML version" (which can be downloaded exactly as it is set up on their website). But they have no legal rights to the text itself, nor do they claim to.
There are many websites that claim copyrights to versions of public domain materials. As long as one doesn't copy original elements, but just the public domain text as we are doing, there is no problem. Dovi 07:43, 25 June 2007 (UTC)Reply
You really should read the discussion that has taken place at WS:COPYVIO#JPS_1917. —Wikijeff 11:52, 26 June 2007 (UTC)Reply

My comments on WS:MESSIANIC

[edit]

Hi, Dovi,

Yes, you are right. At the time I was proposing something like a "Portal:" or "Project:" namespace (although, we already have a "Portal:" namespace, so I was more leaning to that one) for the Messianic project. My reasoning behind this, was considering what we generally put on pages in the "Wikisource:" namespace are usually broad in its scope, whereas the Messianic project is specific in scope (even though there is a lot of literature for this project).

But, as I thought about it more, I realized that this is fairly ill-defined. Meaning, what should be on a WS: page and a Portal: page has really no clear guideline, so as of right now we would need (in my opinion) to discuss a way to revise the way we make lists of pages (e.g., Wikisource:Historical documents or Wikisource:Constitutional documents) and what type of list goes in which type of namespace. Maybe it might be worth phasing "Wikisource:" out altogether in favor of "Portal:".—Zhaladshar (Talk) 13:23, 2 July 2007 (UTC)Reply

User talk:Sanbeg#Bible

[edit]

I was directed to some editions of the Bible (including the JPS 1917) that might be possible to automatically import. One the the Hebrew version appears to be a Copyright problem and the other site's Hebrew has no indication (that I can find with my poor french) as to which version it is. Can you tell if either of these Hebrew version would be acceptable for the verse by verse project?--BirgitteSB 13:27, 11 July 2007 (UTC)Reply
