Your recent uploads

[edit]

Hi Eltomas2003,

You have recently uploaded the following three files to Wikisource, with which I have some concerns:

The first work is entirely in French, and so is out of scope for English Wikisource; and the last appears to be just a random image file and not a written work as such, which is what Wikisource hosts, and thus out of scope as well. For all of them it is an issue that you have not added the appropriate information templates (either {{information}} or {{book}}, as indicated on the edit notice when you edit the file's description page), and there also does not appear to be any good reason why you have uploaded these files locally on Wikisource and not to Wikimedia Commons.

Could you please address these concerns? --Xover (talk) 06:59, 31 May 2020 (UTC)Reply

@Xover: I'm blocked on commons, I uploaded these so I can transfer them to wikisource.--Eltomas2003 (talk) 19:02, 3 June 2020 (UTC)Reply
I'm sure some practical way can be found to compensate for your Commons block where works are otherwise within scope and compliant with their policies. But you need to address the other concerns I brought up above regarding these files too. --Xover (talk) 06:07, 4 June 2020 (UTC)Reply
@Xover: so how do I start contributing to wikisource? My first book?--Eltomas2003 (talk) 18:42, 8 June 2020 (UTC)Reply
I have placed our standard welcome message above, which contains information and links that should get you started. However, the first thing you need to do is address the issues I have enumerated in this thread regarding your uploads. --Xover (talk) 05:53, 9 June 2020 (UTC)Reply
@Xover: Well you could transfer the first and last file to commons, then the french wikisource could deal with the first one and the last one could be used to depict a book. I frogot that I should have added the info templates because the upload wizard didn't have them (I think). Althrough I'd love to get going on my first book (the 2nd file)Eltomas2003 (talk) 02:09, 25 June 2020 (UTC)Reply
this is a link to for the common good you can use this to transfer the other files to commonsEltomas2003 (talk) 03:16, 25 June 2020 (UTC)Reply
I could indeed do that… but is there any reason why I would given you have as yet made zero effort to address the concerns I brought up above? --Xover (talk) 04:34, 25 June 2020 (UTC)Reply
@Xover: At last I have resolved your concerns. I have added the necessary templates for the two files that would be kept. As for the File:Planet stories cover.jpg you can delete it because I found out that it wasn't public domainEltomas2003 (talk) 04:01, 28 June 2020 (UTC)Reply

Now you can use the this!Eltomas2003 (talk) 04:02, 28 June 2020 (UTC)Reply

You still need to provide the correct source for the two PDF files: File:Courspolitiquee02goldgoog.pdf has no source specified, and File:Lessingsnathanwi00lessrich.pdf links to a completely different modern transcription than the scan (and which contains a copyrighted modern preface). I also see you have uploaded yet another file without the requisite information at File:Beyond-earth-tagged.pdf. And while this was indeed published by NASA and may be public domain (but this is by no means certain since the author is not in fact employed by NASA), the cover image is by an independent artist and used merely by permission (which permission does not extend to us). The work also contains numerous photographs of indeterminate copyright status. All of which issues must be addressed before the work can be hosted here (or at Commons). Please do not upload any further files until these issues have been resolved. --Xover (talk) 09:09, 28 June 2020 (UTC)Reply
@Xover: I will refrain from further uploads, are there any other ways I can contribute? Like transferring a book from paper to wiki page?Eltomas2003 (talk) 16:11, 28 June 2020 (UTC)Reply
@Xover: I think I answered my own questionEltomas2003 (talk) 00:49, 29 June 2020 (UTC)Reply
Indeed, Proofreading or Validating pages is the largest and most important task on the project. It is certainly the most time-consuming because raw OCR text contains many and sometimes subtle errors that have to be identified and corrected, and in addition many books use intricate formatting and layout that needs to be reflected here in a completely new medium. Unlike on Commons, whose main purpose is as a repository of free media files, on Wikisource the uploading of media files is a secondary and relatively unimportant task.
However, the files that are uploaded do have to have proper metadata—including the source from which it was downloaded—and a settled copyright status. As yet that is not the case for any of the files you have uploaded, despite my repeated requests for it. I would strongly suggest that you address those issues before you embark on a different task. If necessary (if you are unable to provide the missing information), you can request that the files be deleted using {{sdelete|G7}} (or simply indicate your intent here and I can take care of it). --Xover (talk) 08:36, 29 June 2020 (UTC)Reply
@Xover: Oh forget it, just delete all of them. :) Eltomas2003 (talk) 16:14, 30 June 2020 (UTC)Reply

@Xover: what do you think? :) Eltomas2003 (talk) 19:32, 2 July 2020 (UTC)Reply
Thank you for adding a {{book}} template to your recent uploads. However, as I previously wrote, please do not upload any more files here. Except in limited circumstances we do not want files hosted locally on Wikisource (they should be on Commons), and we don't want random files uploaded that nobody is going to work on. If there is a particular book you want to work on that is not already available you need to request another user to assist you with uploading it, typically on Wikisource:Scriptorium/Help (please make sure you mention that the reason you need assistance is that you're blocked on Commons: proxying for blocked users is not generally permitted, so anyone helping you need to be aware so they can assess their scope for action under policy accordingly).
I also see you have created several Index: pages for these files, but have not filled in any of the bibliographic data in them, nor created a pagelist. As the text of the index says, this is necessary in order to verify the scan is complete and without errors before you can start proofreading. You will find all the information you need on the pages linked from Help:Contents, and if you need assistance you can ask on Wikisource:Scriptorium/Help.
Regarding Page:The History of Justin, Taken Out of the Four and Forty Books of Trogus Pompeius.pdf/11, the page has several problems and certainly is not up to the standard for "Proofread". I have updated the page to reflect the sort of standard we expect before marking a page as Proofread. But, as mentioned, no pages should be proofread before the Index: has been properly filled out and a pagelist created. --Xover (talk) 16:13, 3 July 2020 (UTC)Reply
@Xover: Thank you for telling me that. As I told you before, the reason why I uploaded these files here is because I'm blocked on commons, and I wish you to transfer these files on my behalf. I am going to work on these files in the future. But I have some trouble filling out the index pages and I want you to help me with these. Also can you please tell me how to do a proper proofread, some of the pdfs that I've uploaded, including the korea one, already have text, so no proofread is necessary. Maybe lets bring the whole community there to work on my projects. :) Eltomas2003 (talk) 15:42, 4 July 2020 (UTC) (P.S: Am I on the right track on vindicating myself on the english wikipedia and wikimedia commons?)Reply
Why are you blocked on Commons? I also note that for some of your uploads, much higher quality scans could be located with a minimum of search effort. Additionally one of the files you uploaded locally, doesn't have a compatible license at the listed source.

ShakespeareFan00 (talk) 13:03, 5 July 2020 (UTC)Reply

The way to get back on the right track, is to contribute 'constructively', as well as identifying and openly recognizing the behaviour that got you blocked on the other projects was not acceptable. Merely making 'useful' edits on a project does not work on it's own.ShakespeareFan00 (talk) 13:12, 5 July 2020 (UTC)Reply
@ShakespeareFan00: any tools that can be used to facilitate proofreads? Eltomas2003 (talk) 15:54, 9 July 2020 (UTC)Reply
Yes: reading the documentation to which you have been directed, and the explanations which you have been given, and the examples that several people have provided you with. I can't speak for Wikipedia or Commons, but right now you're so far from on your way to redeeming yourself there that you're pretty much only heading towards getting yourself blocked here. You need to put some effort into actually understanding what this project is about and how to contribute to it properly, and not just goof about while you wait for your blocks on other projects to magically vanish. We don't hold blocks on other projects against anyone, but your actions here have not been particularly impressive.
I suggest you pick a work (a book, typically) and start proofreading it. You've been provided links to help pages and examples of where your previous efforts fell short. I suggest you avail yourself of them and then ask for help if you get stuck. Once you've gotten the hang of the basic proofreading process you can start thinking about branching out.
PS. Which part of "Please don't upload any more files here" was not clear? I've now had to repeat this request no less than three times. --Xover (talk) 17:09, 9 July 2020 (UTC)Reply
@Xover: oh forget it Eltomas2003 (talk) 15:32, 11 July 2020 (UTC)Reply
@Xover: I was busy testing the abuse filter for page names in a special page I created specifically for this purpose? can you please delete it? thanks --Eltomas2003 (talk) 16:31, 3 August 2020 (UTC)Reply
There is no reason for you to be "testing" the abuse filter. If you wish to contribute constructively to this project you should be focussing on learning to proofread pages at an acceptable quality, not generating pointless extra work for other contributors. --Xover (talk) 16:59, 3 August 2020 (UTC)Reply

Proofreading statuses

[edit]

Hi,

I'm afraid your recent proofreading edits don't quite meet the standard for marking a page as "proofread" (yellow):

Specifically you should not simply save the raw OCR text as "proofread", because it very often has errors in it. If you must save the raw OCR (though there is very little point to do this) set the status to "not proofread" (red). Proofread means you have gone though it once, corrected any OCR errors and applied relevant formatting. There is a basic summary of expectations for proofreading at Help:Beginner's guide to proofreading.

Thanks for contributing and I look forward to seeing great things in future! Inductiveloadtalk/contribs 11:42, 8 July 2020 (UTC)Reply
