Thank you for your kindness. I have never been through that exact process before today and I have learned a bit more of the over-all process. So, if I want to learn how to upload a book to Wikisource I somehow transfer (with a "tool") a .djvu file to WikiCommons and then click on a "Wikisource logo" (where would that come from when the file is on Commons?) and the file is moved to Wikisource (ah ha, thus the Wikisource logo!) then I click on the WS logo and that file is moved to WS or do the images reside on WCommons? I would like to learn how to upload books and of course I would help others by teaching what I have learned. There should be an area on WS that teaches this in uncomplicated instructions. Wiki Commons created a uncomplicated template for easy uploading &c there, so why cannot the same thing be done on WikiSource? Again, thank you for your kindness. I do know a few people (not students) at the Virginia Military Institute and through them I hope to find the text to that partial page so that I can fill it in. Suitable License

In looking over all that you have shown me I encountered this statement on Commons, ["If you do not provide suitable license and source information, your upload will be deleted without further notice. Thank you for your understanding."] What "suitable license" are they asking for? I tend to think "PD" but I also doubt very much that is what they are asking for. You have made this look easy

Your explanations are superb! I was reading line-by-line and going through the process while reading line-by-line as opposed to reading all that you provided before exploring. I believe I made a mistake in doing it the way I explored. Now I think all of it comes together and it doesn't look difficult. There is an old adage about this, something like "Murphy's Law" :) I do think I understand it all now and in time I will know for positive. I have uploaded and downloaded and FTP'd files, images, books for many years now so it was only a matter of using .djvu or .pdf and how the process is used from commons to wikisource. So, what is that "tool" that AdamBMorgan mentioned to me used for -- something like URL2Commons ? I'll find out one way or another. I do know people do things in different ways and therefore each person's instructions may differ a bit. Again, I thank you for all of your kindness and teaching me. Community portal

Erasmo, you've suggested I help on changes to main page & community portal and I'm happy to. Can I explain what I think is needed?

Basically we need to set up a proofreading programme and for that we need lists of "to be proofread" and "to be validated" titles to parallel the list of recently completed titles, which Adam has just improved a lot. It's quite a difficult task to pick realistic targets from the 4,000 odd incomplete index files which is why I posted on MOTM about categorising index files. I've cut the list down to more like 1,000 but it's still far too many. But the failure of anyone to respond makes me wonder if I'm totally out of step. Am I? term "Modern"

I think the word "modern" should be tossed out completely except by century. Century is definite whereas "modern" always becomes the past. But I do not want to touch the good work others have set up and are setting up because it may create confusion. Create an area other than here for suggestions, make it stand out in a different color and point to it on Scriptorium. Erasmo, thanks for signing up. First one. It's a neat idea having a friendly between languages, but I'd suggest looking at this report. We're well behind French, German, etc. and until we get our act together we'd get knocked every which way!

Any thoughts on Maintenance of the Month?

As you are the only other person who seems to actually participate so far, do you have any thoughts on getting the Maintenance of the Month project going?

As I stated when I offered to get this project started, I am not good at the human side of things. This might explain the lack of interest so far. I have a few more ideas for getting attention for the project but they mostly amount to telling people it is there (such as my posts on Scriptorium). If you have any ideas, feel free to share. I am also not sure if the project itself is structured in a useful way. I have tried to keep it simple but I know I can overcomplicate things. This could be a barrier to entry for some people. If this appears to be the case, can you tell me? Plain proofreading

Erasmo, I've put a proposal on Proofreading discussion which I'm sure will be contentious and would like your comments on before taking it further. Without something such, I really don't think we'll ever get many more people involved.

And the item at Wikisource:Scriptorium#Transclusion shows how deficient our current guidelines are when someone can mark a project as "Done" without it actually being transcluded. This is obviously my next job. Chris55 (talk) 09:38, 10 September 2012 (UTC)Reply

Chris55, I know the difference between transcluded and transcribed. I simply misused the words when asking that question you cite above. I wanted to know if a work is "done" only after transclusion. As seen, all Indexes allow "Done" upon all pages proofread and validated. New Main Page

Erasmo, what is the following for?


I don't think it looks good because it looks like tabs on computer browsers and too, it goes nowhere. I clicked on it to see why it is on the new main page and it just links to this -> "File:Maket icon.svg" Still, it looks like tabs on a browser or at least it reminds me of tabs on browsers or perhaps a Card File that goes nowhere. None of those images should be clickable. Other people just don't bother to get involved or don't care to mention it. I've been here since 2006 (Brother Officer & William Maury Morris) and I have never bothered to mention it before now. I mention it now only because you and others are developing a new main page. Perhaps people have come along and clicked on them and got nowhere and either browsed or left. I like the present look, ideas, and functionality but I also await that upgrade just as I would with the interest and expectation of anything new and improved. Erasmo, it pleases me to no end that you have made those icons un-clickable! I had gotten more and more annoyed with that situation. It would, perhaps, be better if the they actually did something, connected to something new, or important than to be un-clickable. It is the best I have seen. The icons look excellent and the ability to hide or show a mass of information keeps everything looking nice and working easily and efficiently. I like those icons very much. They are impressive. I noticed too that you included red/blue glasses. Glasses like that are used for viewing 3-dimensional anaglyphs and in visual technology these are already abundant and popular. The idea is old in some ways from the 3-D films but yet that same idea is very modern. Anaglyphs have already lead to bona-fide 3-dimensional technology "on the cutting edge" of photography. My eldest son is deeply involved in the technology that as he says, "is on the bleeding edge" which is not anaglyphs but more modern than anaglyphs. He has spent thousands of dollars and works with a friend creating 3-dimensional images that look nowhere plain or more so "dull" -- which you show on your page that you and I are talking about. Your page is wonderful and getting back a little more to 3-dimensional technology I state that in case you may not be aware, 3-dimensional cameras are "the thing" now and that market is growing very fast as companies compete. Those digital images are not red/blue anaglyphs but instead are real-life today's technology. Yet still, that is only the beginning of 3-d technology. My son and his friend have gone beyond even today's technology of 3-D photographs. They can create fantastic 3-D images of things that do not exist. I just awoke after being up all night so I hope this does not sound like nonsense to you as I meander with words and thoughts. I don't know where you got those beautiful icons that are connected to show and don't show but that sort of thing is about being not only organized but pleasing to the eye and pleasing to explore as opposed to the usual boring pages one sees throughout Internet. It is just beautiful in colors and yet it is an advanced method of connecting to information -- all on one page -- and very pleasing to the eye. It is the way things should be.

You state that, "I had posted an unsuccessful proposal for adopting it to the Scriptorium," and my thought is that while so much work is advanced technology, for less than a decade because it will change, the people that create javascripts (.js) do not seem to understand basic human nature to a point where they do not use the sort of technology that you have showing now with those icons of show or hide -- not enough and certainly not colorful as what you have created! In what I have seen throughout 65 years of technology from tubes to transistors and better we have administrators that appear not to be aware of the basic human senses with sight as being the human #1 sense. Your proposal not being heeded is proof of what I have written here. I look to advanced technology due to my own thoughts and imagination and use of my senses and I can see beyond dull-looking technology. My son also keeps me beyond the technology of what I see and think of. He has been in newspapers since age 10 for computer skills and he will be age 40 this Nov.1st, 2012. He has raised his daughter with advanced technology and naturally she has her own 3-dimensional camera but that is the least of what he has done for her education beyond what I have ever had and worked with and I remain futuristic as possible which is probably why I cannot stand blandness due to a lack of visual but also functional aids on pages such as what you have presented. A person can be intelligent with tech and still not understand the basics of human nature and art and yet, this is a "color world". Main page

Everything apart from the changes to new texts should be live now. I will get to that shortly. When I first tried to make these changes my connection kept dropping out while editing the header, so I decided to wait just in case I lost connection completely half way through the necessary assorted edits. - AdamBMorgan (talk) 18:56, 2 November 2012 (UTC)Reply

I think it's all done now but I had to change the new text template a bit. I wanted it to be backwards-compatible with the previous version; so other users wouldn't get confused if they hadn't been following along, so I didn't have to change much, and because there are a lot of archives that also use the template (eg. Template:New texts/2012/09) that I did not want to break. The image elements kept causing problems. At the moment, I have removed the div from the active version; it may be possible to replace it later. In the meantime, I would suggest using it like the image(s) on Wikipedia's "Did You Know" box (on their front page): Small, floated to the side and used sparingly (only for the top item, if possible). If you want to change the way people use the "New Texts" box, you are probably going to have to bring this up on Scriptorium and spread the idea. Otherwise, just changing the tools means there's a good chance many people won't notice or care about the changes and will try to carry on regardless.

New and Improved Wikisource page

Erasmo, on your very fine iconic work I have seen this several times as I visited that area; "Introduction – For Wikipedians". It is all text and a hyperlink. I tend to follow all of the icons so I only recently clicked on that part of the page. I think it may be good to re-word it with something like, "Wikipedians Welcome to Wikisource", or something else. This is just my opinion on it. I very much like the beautiful and organized icons on your page—which again is what I followed instead of that text/link. I state these things because I believe a hard worker, as shown by his work done, should have some feedback. Those who say nothing help in no way. Yes, that's the route I would take, questions and answers and calm/quiet music. You can also use several of our editor's submitted photograph, and/or a Cam Video from their computer. A collection of these things can then be selective. In another series you can video some shots of our Main Page, the Newsletter, and still later, How To Use Wikisource.

Too, some of the User's pages can be shot, our awards, and more. The number of years various editors have been here could be important because it shows how much people enjoy working here. This can be included with your questions/answers. Too, how the people came to be here from the start. I started on Wikipedia and contributed many articles and graduated to books. Books can be shown and also images beside transcriptions and finally transclusions. This could be a wonderful project and Wikisource will be known. It should be stated that Wikisource is a sister Wiki. In fact, you could show _all sister wikis_ and _all languages_. Perhaps take an article that is in several languages and video each language. Hello.

As you've probably realised, at the time I changed the above page I was both ignorant of the proper format for a disambiguation page (though I had realised this was probably the correct thing to do); as well as being pretty frustrated that it redirected to an individual whom I thought was not a "normal" default choice (with due respect to Theornamentalist for creating it!)

In hind sight probably both of us made the choice which involving least effort in the immediate short term, perhaps with good intentions of revisiting the matter later; and then subsequently simply forgot.

I certainly did, and can only repeat my thanks to you both for taking the longer view, and giving me the hint how to handle like situations.

Finally, as a matter of style: I thought the disambiguation option should be triggered by having a situation of three or more choices, and may not have been warranted where simple alternatives are offered. Have I just "made up a rule in my head" (i.e. a false one), or is this really the preferred approach?

Automated import of openly licensed scholarly articles

Hello Erasmo Barresi,

We are putting together a proposal about the automated import of openly licensed scholarly articles, and since you are an active Wikisourceror, we'd appreciate yourcomments on the Scriptorium. For convenience, I'm copying our proposal here:

The idea of systematically importing openly licensed scholarly articles into Wikisource has popped up from time to time. For instance, it formed the core of WikiProject Academic Papers and is mentioned in the Wikisource vision. However, the Wikiproject relied on human power, never reached its full potential, and eventually became inactive. The vision has yet to materialise.
We plan to bridge the gap through automation. We are a subset of WikiProject Open Access (user:Daniel Mietchen, user:Maximilanklein, user:MattSenate), and we have funding from the Open Society Foundations via Wikimedia Deutschland to demo suitable workflows at Wikimania (see project page).
Specifically, we plan to import Open Access journal articles into Wikisource when they are cited on Wikipedia. The import would be performed by a group of bots intended to make reference handling more interoperable across Wikimedia sites. Their main tasks are:
  • (on Wikipedia) signalling which references are openly licensed, and link them to the full text on Wikisource, the media on Commons and the metadata on Wikidata;
  • (on Commons) importing images and other media associated with the source article;
  • (on Wikisource) importing the full text of the source article and embedding the media in there;
  • (on Wikidata) handling the metadata associated with the source article, and signalling that the full text is on Wikisource and the media on Commons.
These Open Access imports on Wikisource will be linked to and from other Wikimedia sister sites. Our first priority though will be linking from English Wikipedia, focusing on the most cited Open Access papers, and the top-100 medical articles.
In order to move forward with this, we need
  • General community approval
  • Community feedback on workflows and scrutiny on our test imports in specific.

Please reevaluate your position. The image is by w:User talk:Ragesoss. The image is hosted on Wikimedia Commons. It has been selected as a Quality Image on Wikimedia Commons. I can't access the original blog post, but if the issue how a version of this same image was used there, I had invited Adrianne to use that image however she liked in any circumstances. Since you stopped by anyway, I was hoping you could take a look at my attempt at a Sidebar-Flatlist gadget and tell me what you think. Suggestions/improvements welcome.

Also, I was wondering if you had any pull with Universal Language Selector developers. I'm trying to get Font Awesome added as universally available font-family. @George Orwell III: I have had it enabled for a while actually. It is quite useful for editing in the Page namespace as it allows the scan image and the text box to be wider, and I guess this advantage is appreciated even better by those who have a landscape monitor than by those who have a square one as I do. However, in the main namespace it makes reading a bit difficult, unless you use one of the display options that narrow the text area. I also have the "compact language link" beta feature enabled and when I click the "n more" link (which only appears in pages with a large number of interlanguage links, like Author:William Shakespeare), a portion of the language selection flyout falls outside the screen (not sure if this is about the settings on my computer, though).
Its not you; its because the div container for the entire flyout seems to be designed to compensate for the normal site logo scheme by having an inline css of top:-250px applied instead of something sane like top:50px;. There's not much I can do about that while it's still in beta (and insists on using fixed length pixels rather than relative ems to boot) but I think I can limit the Gadget's drop down menu to a reasonable "height" and then have a up/down scroll-bar kick in if there are more languages listed than that height can list without one. Thanks anyway. Its a shame others won't get the chance to easily make their own "compact" menus or lists (see thumbnail). I'm tempted to turn the Font Awesome compatibility gadget on as a site wide default but that "solution" still screws the visitors not logging in.
