Quotation marks, greek characters and references!

[edit]

{{helpme}}

Hey billinghurst!

Thanks a lot for your welcome message. I have been proofreading and fixing a few pages and have run into some issues.

Quotation Marks The books usually seems to use smart quotes that look like this “” or ‘’ but at some places the changes I made to this affect got reverted. Why is that?

Greek characters I tried to type the correct special character from the book, that was "æ", but it got reverted to something else. Why is that?

References I was working on a page that has a reference. I know how to deal with references in most cases, but on this page the same reference continues to the next page. How am I suppose to format this? Copy over the whole reference to this page and ignore it on the next? Is there a better way?

Thanks again for your help!

1) Our Wikisource:Style guide says to utilise standard single/double quotes rather than trying for smart quotes. It is typographic thing, and as they are not standard keyboard characters, we went the KISS route. 2) The reversions in that form were less than ideal. We replicate text as per the work, so æ was right. 3) For references that continue, we utilise <ref name=...> then on the subsequent page(s) we utilise <ref follow=...> and keep in situ as described at Help:Footnotes and endnotes. I can dig some up if needed and prodded, though I know that I have done some in Church and State under the Tudors which is one of my current projects. — billinghurst sDrewth 13:59, 5 January 2015 (UTC)Reply

oops I totally apologize for the inconvenience I may have caused with these mindless changes I made. There is no problem with your edits, I will be more careful next time, again sorry.--Rochefoucauld (talk) 00:19, 6 January 2015 (UTC)Reply
Thanks billinghurst and Rochefoucauld for your response. I too will be more careful with my edits and read editing guidelines more thoroughly before editing. Prtksxna (talk) 23:27, 11 January 2015 (UTC)Reply

Indian Legislation

[edit]

Using sidenotes works, but I'd used my approach because it was more mobile friendly ( and is essentially how the UK legislation.gov.uk site dealt with the same issues.) It would be nice to set a site-wide style guide for this type of content, so there aren't conflicts of style regarding these. ShakespeareFan00 (talk) 09:24, 1 March 2020 (UTC)Reply

Hey @ShakespeareFan00: 👋🏽! Firstly, thank you so much for adding the CAA Gazzette to Wikisource. I wanted to do it, but wasn't aware of PD-INGov, and thus afraid of the copyright law. So, thanks 🙏🏽! About the sidenotes, I completely agree that we should (1) have something mobile friendly, and (2) standardize the style. I would however like to maintain the layout as close to the original as possible (even move the footnotes to the margin if possible). If the template only adds CSS to do this, maybe we can figure out a way that it collapses on mobile? Do you think that could be a solution? --Prtksxna (talk) 15:21, 1 March 2020 (UTC)Reply
It's more complex than just CSS, and is a known issue. The layout approach I used avoids the need for special CSS/ dynamic layouts as such. As I said it was based on the conversions the UK legislation.gov.uk site does, which essentially does away with the sidenotes by converting them to headings. As most Indian legislation follows the same style outlines as the UK used to, using the same sort of conversion/simplification of the layout seemed entirely reasonable.

Page:Maharashtra Anti-Superstition and Black Magic Act.pdf/1

[edit]

I found normal OCR cannot process Sanskrit-like alphabets. Could you help with dealing with the header of Page:Maharashtra Anti-Superstition and Black Magic Act.pdf/1, and also suggest ways to deal with these alphabets? Many thanks.廣九直通車 (talk) 12:15, 3 March 2020 (UTC)Reply

Hey @廣九直通車:! Thanks for reaching out. I'll try to look into this as soon as I can :) --Prtksxna (talk) 17:22, 3 March 2020 (UTC)Reply
Nope, I found Google OCR works, thanks!廣九直通車 (talk) 00:37, 4 March 2020 (UTC)Reply
