DNBer?

I tidied to style the two pages involving Tuke, and will add the other bits imminently. You may wish to go back to those pages, proofread them again, make necessary adaptions, and then change them to validated (green box with radio button). Voila complete. If you are working on WP article, you can use it like {{DNB|Tuke, Brian}} to get it link through to WS. Thanks for the tidying. I am not really sure what I am doing other then checking the OCR and de-hyphenating. My interest is in sources for postal history related personalities where no articles exist on the English Wikipedia. I have read the DNB information but don't know how to extract the biographies into stand alone pages for those that span multiple pages, such as Charles Povey. For instance I see from this index page several individual pages linked such as Prideaux, John (1578-1650) (DNB00). Bear with me and I am sure I will be able to do some useful work though I am rather active on the enwiki. Thanks Ww2censor (talk) 16:18, 10 February 2010 (UTC)

Hi there - yes, I've just been checking up on you on enWP. The article creation is done in two steps: marking up the section(s) in the Page namespace, and creating a page in the main namespace with two things on it (a header, i.e. form to fill in, plus the transclusion data). Apart from the fact that we have three flavours of articles (no transclusion being one, and two modes of transclusion), it's not that devilish for those used to templates. More details on Wikisource:WikiProject DNB/Transclusion; or look at recent page creations (e.g. on my userpage); or do ask, which is allowed under wikiproject rules :-). OK, I have just done Povey, Charles (DNB00) to give you the idea. It runs over three pages: the section markup is only required on the first and last. The middle page is just marked up for format. I created it with

Another version

The djvu compression on the DNB files is sometimes problematic, mark those pages as such I think is the plan. I mention this because I saw your difficulty with one page on RC, there is a jpeg version that usually has greater clarity: I believe this is the page you were trying to view, use the zoom to check the vague bits or right click to download the whole page. • There is an online conversion from files, including pdf, available at any2djvu. You may need to download the file, then select it as a local file. Larger files are sometimes available from the archive.org indexes, the pdf may be enough. It usually works, in a reasonable amount of time, no guarantees though. Thanks for your work on Wolf Tone

I saw your request at Charles Matthews' talk page.

I am not an expert, but I made two trivial modifications. First, I added the Wikipedia link in the DNB00 template: It's always a good idea to check to see if there is a WP article to match the DNB00 artice. Next, I italicized two seperate instances of "d." to "d." in the article in page space. the italizized "d." and "fl." are easy to miss. I would generally overlook them, except that I now carefully double-check any "d." or "fl." prefix in a date field. I also try to be careful about the "l." that represents "pounds."

With respect to linking: I personally don't spend much time on this, because philosophically, I think of WS as reference source for WP, and I put my links in WP. Within the DNB00 at WS, I think we should link to other DNB00 articles where that is the clear intention of the original: this clearly includes any name marked with [q. v.], and to most (or all?) names in small caps in inline references and in the "list of authorities." However, I personally would prefer to defer this until we have most of the DNB00 completed, but each of us is free to decide to do this differently. Since Charles has done more than 50% of the articles, I will defer to his opinion.-Arch dude (talk) 21:56, 30 May 2010 (UTC)

Editing issue

I have not been editing here recently but something odd seems to have happened. When in edit mode, I no longer see the header or footers, just the main prose section. Where has it gone or is there some preference that may have caused them to vanish? Looking at other previously edited pages gives me no clues. TIA Ww2censor (talk) 18:25, 31 May 2012 (UTC)

Page namespace header and footer field changes

Following changes to the way the MediaWiki software loads Javascript dependencies, you may find headers & footers in the Page namespace don't appear as you expected. The option to turn them on or off by default is now in the Editing tab of your User Preferences menu, rather than as an optional gadget. If you were using the gadget to force showing them prior to the software update and intend to enable the option on the Editing tab in your Preferences now, please disable the gadget in the Gadget tab also found in your User Preferences at the same time to avoid possible future conflicts. -- George Orwell III (talk) 21:24, 31 May 2012 (UTC)
