Helpfully a newer a set of scans have been uploaded, but the migration process of existing efforts to the new scans needs to be completed, re-alignment of pages.

Can someone please take a look at all the volumes in the linked template and re-align pages accordingly?

I've left a note for the uploader asking them to update the source file information at Commons. I think these are Now the HT scans of the mid 1960's reprint. ShakespeareFan00 (talk) 14:44, 26 October 2022 (UTC)

@ShakespeareFan00: It's not clear to me what the problem is, nor why you think the Scan Lab is the right place for it. Could you elaborate? Xover (talk) 10:48, 3 April 2023 (UTC)
The problem is that all the volumes have pages that need re-aligning with the new scans, apart from Volume 9 which you had done already. ShakespeareFan00 (talk) 10:59, 3 April 2023 (UTC)
@ShakespeareFan00: Where is the list of necessary changes? Xover (talk) 11:14, 3 April 2023 (UTC)
I'll look into compiling one shortly..ShakespeareFan00 (talk) 11:42, 3 April 2023 (UTC)

Okay it seems someone also needs to redo the page-lists for volume 4-2,5,6,7 and 8. This is more complex than first thought. ShakespeareFan00 (talk) 11:57, 3 April 2023 (UTC)
@ShakespeareFan00: The moves listed above have been done, along with the implied deletes to make way. In future it is sufficient to specify index, page range, and offset if the moves are regular; but for necessary deletions to make way for the moves, please list each individual page to be deleted. @ShakespeareFan00: Not a single one of those instructions was correct. What you meant to say was: 1) delete p. 1-3, 5; shift p. 4 by -3; shift p. 6-8 by -4; shift p. 27, 50-53, 268-271 by -3. Please make sure the instructions are actually correct (take your time to get them right rather than hurrying just to get them done), otherwise I just end up redoing the research that you just did and wasting everyone's time. In any case, the moves for vol. 5 are now Done.
PS. @Theknightwho: these multi-gigabyte PDF files are darn near impossible to work with (mostly due to limitations of MediaWiki's PDF handling, but also because PDF as a file format kinda sucks for this). In future, please consider other options before uploading such. One possible option to check is asking for help here on the Scan Lab. For many (but not all) such cases we can make more optimised DjVu files (and MediaWiki handles DjVu better than PDF) that will be a lot less painfull to work with. Xover (talk) 09:37, 4 April 2023 (UTC)
@Xover Thanks, and noted. I generally tend to draft things locally on my machine, so hadn't been impacted by the problem - but I appreciate that obviously isn't how everyone does things. Theknightwho (talk) 09:47, 4 April 2023 (UTC)
@Xover , Noted, and thanks, I was trying my best. If someone wanted to generate a djvu set for these it would certainly make them easier to work with. I've also potentially spotted some absent illustrations in the uploaded reprint versions, but the text (barring one page of an Index) seems to be intact so far.
@Xover, Perhaps someone else should sit down calmly, and recheck the pagelists for these, as I suggested earlier as I've found a placeholdered but missing page in one of the volumes. Converting the upload set to Djvu at the same time as patching the volumes would of course be a good idea. ShakespeareFan00 (talk) 10:02, 4 April 2023 (UTC)
@Xover: My preferred approach right now, is that as none of the volumes apart from Volume 1 are that progressed is to just delete all extant pages for the other volumes, and we start again with a KNOWN and correctly sourced set of volumes. The history of the uploads at Commons has 2 differing sets from vaired sources, which is why the anomalies arose. I will not be working on this again until there is ONE clear set with approriate meta-data and pagelists ShakespeareFan00 (talk) 10:26, 4 April 2023 (UTC)
Volume 6 - Index:The Statutes of the Realm Vol 6 (1685-94).pdf
Pages 1-4 delete
Pages 8-9 shift -4 to become 1-4
Page 22 delete
pages 82-84 delete
Page 186(blank) shift +1 to become 187
Page 185 shift +3 to become 188 (updating raw image template as well)
Page 646 delete
Page 681 to 684 delete
This matches the current scan, but I have concerns about differences in the images included, the HT reprint may have some engraving missing. Can someone more adept at comparisons take a look?

Notifying all members of Scan Lab (more info · opt out): (User:Inductiveload, User:Xover, User:Mpaa) This file should be converted to a DJVU and locally uploaded as The Strand Magazine (Volume 73).djvu due to potential copyright issues. I uploaded to Commons to make it accessible in the MC and easier to download than the individual pages from HT. Languageseeker (talk) 00:36, 3 January 2023 (UTC)

@Languageseeker: Is there any particular reason this needs to be converted to DjVu? Not that I mind, but I see there are quite a few proofread pages and just transferring it locally will be a lot less work. Xover (talk) 15:28, 1 April 2023 (UTC)

Here are 2 scans to be fixed. Thanks, Yann (talk) 18:16, 29 April 2023 (UTC)

@Yann: I don't see a problem with the linked page (and the following few) on The Confessions of Jean-Jacques Rousseau? --Xover (talk) 12:08, 9 May 2023 (UTC)
@Xover: For Page:The Confessions of Jean-Jacques Rousseau, 1896, vol. 1.djvu/31, pages 1 and 2 are missing. There is also a shift of 8 pages between 1 and 289. Sorry if I wasn't clear. Yann (talk) 13:57, 9 May 2023 (UTC)
@Yann: Done. In addition to pp. 1–2 the scan was missing pp. 19–20, 23–24. In addition, the pagelist didn't account for the 5 embedded plates that are outside the page numbering sequence. Xover (talk) 18:14, 9 May 2023 (UTC)
@Yann:: Emilius is Done. I don't have decent tools for working with PDF files so I had to create a DjVu, and because of reasons I made a new index instead of moving the old one (quick and dirty, you'll want to check it): Index:Rousseau - Emilius, or A treatise of education, 1773, v. 3.djvu. I've moved the pages from the old index to the new and updated all links to point to the new index. --Xover (talk) 07:02, 10 May 2023 (UTC)
@Xover: Thanks for looking into this. Isn't an issue to have 2 PDF files and 1 Djvu in the same series? If you have the missing images, I could make a PDF file. Yann (talk) 14:12, 10 May 2023 (UTC)
@Yann: Not really. Some people are bothered by the inconsistency, but there's really no reason we can't mix and match. Personally I'm more bothered by the file naming scheme than the file ending. *shrug* It's all technical details of little importance in the grand scheme of things. Xover (talk) 15:02, 10 May 2023 (UTC)
@Xover: I have just discovered that pages xii and xiii are missing in Index:The Confessions of Jean-Jacques Rousseau, 1896, vol. 2.djvu (after Page:The Confessions of Jean-Jacques Rousseau, 1896, vol. 2.djvu/17). Yann (talk) 19:55, 10 May 2023 (UTC)

The Works of J.J. Rousseau

This section was archived on a request by: --Xover (talk) 16:04, 28 May 2023 (UTC)

Hi, There is an edition of The Works of J.J. Rousseau, in 10 volumes, but I can't find a complete set. That would be better than to have disparate editions of Rousseau's works. Does anyone know how to get the scans from that link? Thanks, Yann (talk) 21:07, 29 April 2023 (UTC)

@Yann: I'm coming up with bupkis here. Jisc doesn't really appear to have it, they're just listing a single volume on HathiTrust. The Wellcome Collection seems to have two complete sets (nzkc25jx and e47w77eu), but these are both part of "Eighteenth Century collections online" which requires Athens or Shibbolet login from a cooperating library (or other GLAM). If these are actually in Wellcome's own collections (rather than a catalogued third-party resource, which it may well be because EEBO etc. were public—private partnerships with severe access restrictions) it may be possible to contact them directly and get access to the scans. If you go that route I suggest you ask for high-res image files rather than PDF so we can manipulate them ourselves (add OCR, or add/remove/rotate/crop pages, if needed). Xover (talk) 06:26, 10 May 2023 (UTC)
@Xover: I contacted them, and got an answer: Historical Texts should provide an option to download these publications in PDF format under the icon next to ‘My texts’ at the top of the page. However I don’t understand what that means. I created a Library Account, but I still get Sorry, access to this resource has been restricted. Has anyone an account there? Yann (talk) 12:13, 12 May 2023 (UTC)
@Yann: I suspect that means that you got a stock answer, and that the scans are "owned" by one of the big academic publishers that won't let you download them. My only suggestion is to try replying to them and saying these specific works do not show the download option and can they help. Xover (talk) 13:27, 15 May 2023 (UTC)
I contacted them again, and they told me that one needs to go there in person with a ID card to validate the account. :((( Yann (talk) 20:18, 15 May 2023 (UTC)

Monthly Challenge April and May 2023

Notifying all members of Scan Lab (more info · opt out): (User:Inductiveload, User:Xover, User:Mpaa)

Thanks. MER-C (talk) 16:30, 1 May 2023 (UTC)

@MER-C: Vol. 1 has been migrated to fixed Index:Great expectations (1861 Volume 1).djvu. This one was particularly annoying: the pages were present in the scanned copy, but the scanner botched the focus. They're tagged as such so the derived products (the pages in the book reader at IA, the downloadable PDF, etc.) do not include them. But if you download the raw scan images (.zip) they're present there and fully readable despite the bad focus. In any case, I've regenerated the scan as a DjVu with the missing pages included and the duplicate pages removed, and migrated everything over to the new index. It should be good to go now, with the caveat that I'm not entirely sure how the statistics pages etc. of the Monthly Challenge will handle an index being renamed. It might be fine, but might also end up treating them as if these were separate works (and could break in any number of ways). If that happens you'll need to talk to Inductiveload. PS. Since I have to migrate both this and Vol. 3 to a new index (PDF vs. DjVu), would you like me to also create a new index for Vol. 2 so there's a uniform set? Xover (talk) 09:55, 10 May 2023 (UTC)
I expect that the stats bot will figure it out as long as the new index is the one referenced in the MC data table and the old one is removed. It'll trawl the new-to-it pages of the index from scratch the first time it runs after that. Inductiveloadtalk/contribs 21:17, 10 May 2023 (UTC)
@MER-C: Index:Great expectations (1861 Volume 3).pdf has been migrated to Index:Great expectations (1861 Volume 3).djvu to fix the issue. This was another annoying one: the scan was actually ok as such, but something about the PDF made MediaWiki produce garbage when it tried to extract that page at some resolutions (but not others; probably it was related to the low resolution scan so the "thumbnails" requested required scaling up). Xover (talk) 11:08, 17 May 2023 (UTC)
@MER-C (CC @TE(æ)A,ea.): I cannot access the source file (it's geolocked) for Index:The Works of H G Wells Volume 8.pdf, and I've been unable to find an alternate scan. Unless someone can find me scan to work from I won't be able to do much with this (there are no decent tools for manipulating PDF files in this way). Xover (talk) 11:12, 17 May 2023 (UTC)
@MER-C, @TE(æ)A,ea.: Actually, I lie: it was a bit hacky but I did find a way to work with it. Everything is migrated over to Index:The Works of H G Wells Volume 8.djvu so it should be good to go now. Xover (talk) 13:03, 18 May 2023 (UTC)

Thanks all. MER-C (talk) 16:20, 18 May 2023 (UTC)
