Greek help please

Could someone do the Greek on this page's footnote? Page:Roman History of Ammianus Marcellinus.djvu/379 - Tannertsf (talk) 11:46, 4 November 2011 (UTC)

This is a site that could help you to insert Greek text Greek typing tool. --Mpaa (talk) 12:51, 4 November 2011 (UTC)
alternately utilise {{greek missing}}, mark it problematic, and someone with will get to it when they have availability. — billinghurst sDrewth 13:44, 4 November 2011 (UTC)
Done, please check. (Being lazy, I just went from Iliad over to EL and then modified the text to match the version on the page.) -- Visviva (talk) 16:06, 4 November 2011 (UTC)

Yes it looks good. Thank you. - Tannertsf (talk) 18:18, 4 November 2011 (UTC)

This seems like a good a place to mention as any that the math extension can now typeset some archaic greek characters not use today. This came up when someone at WP was writing an article on Ptolomy's table of chords. Examples are and . I didn't know if any older texts hear might run into these characters. But if I thought it might help someone. I have added the full list of them to meta:Help:Displaying a formula Thenub314 (talk) 05:30, 9 November 2011 (UTC)
Sounds like a help page that explains foreign characters and where to find help or methods on the wider wiki would be useful. You would think that it is also a page that we could discuss the import of MediaWiki:Edittools, and assistance templatates. — billinghurst sDrewth 12:01, 9 November 2011 (UTC)
It's probably a bad idea to use the math extension for non-math. We can include the characters Ϟ, Ϛ and Ϡ directly, and they'll be searchable and more likely to be handled by a screen reader.--Prosfilaes (talk) 12:28, 17 December 2011 (UTC)
This tool is a useful one for Greek, and I have collected some archaic characters here --Zyephyrus (talk) 21:03, 17 December 2011 (UTC)

Horizontal lists

Not sure whether we have any or not, however, reading Signpost WP has a new class and bizo to handle such. Full detail at w:Wikipedia:HLIST#Horizontal_lists and it may be something for us to consider for some of our ToCs Category:TOC templates and other bits onsite. — billinghurst sDrewth 06:41, 22 November 2011 (UTC)

p.s.- I've since added the needed bits to Common.js & Common.css to make this work as described. In short, all that is needed is to wrap the list with something set to a class of hlist. Ex.
<ul class="hlist">
* first
* second
* third
* fourth
* fifth
</ul>

.... results in:

    • first
    • second
    • third
    • fourth
    • fifth

Author category sort

When using the [[Category:PSM contributors|Last name]], I always add the last name. Now, I noticed that in Author:George Abram Miller's page the category doesn't have the last name and it still properly displays under the letter "M". Does this mean that the last name is not necessary when categorizing authors? — Ineuw talk 00:03, 10 December 2011 (UTC)

Yes, the {{author}} template includes a defaultsort command based on the "lastname" parameter. If this is returned, the template will handle sorting itself. (Although it won't handle any complicated on unique situations, should they eve turn up.) It's not necessarily a bad idea, however, to back this up by providing a hard-coded sort key; just in case the template fails in some unexpected way. - AdamBMorgan (talk) 01:34, 10 December 2011 (UTC)

Thanks. This really helps.— Ineuw talk 01:55, 10 December 2011 (UTC)

Noincluded text in Page namespace

Is there a preference or something that puts all "noincluded" text in the main edit window in Page: namespace rather than putting it in the separate header and footer windows? Angr 15:39, 12 December 2011 (UTC)

What do you mean? Is it related to the fact that the code automatically breaks and move text into the three edit boxes (function "pr_make_edit_area" at proofread.js)? Is there some kind of error? -Aleator (talk) 00:11, 13 December 2011 (UTC)
I just want to be able to see all the text, including anything "noincluded" at the beginning and the end, in a single edit window, rather than having it spread across three edit windows. At least as an option, some of the time. Angr 00:19, 13 December 2011 (UTC)
Turn off your javascript setting in your browser and load the page. Personally if I want to do that I find it easier to use AWB which is how I have it set up by default that and I then don't have to stuff around with the settings in browsers. — billinghurst sDrewth 03:45, 13 December 2011 (UTC)

JSTOR and Public domain text

I've just read on Wikipedia JSTOR article that they are releasing their material into the public domain. Has any one downloaded anything from them since they made this announcement in Sep. 2011? — Ineuw talk 03:50, 16 December 2011 (UTC)

There are two archived talks on harvesting PD works from JSTOR. JeepdaySock (talk) 11:42, 16 December 2011 (UTC)

User:JeepdaySock, thanks. It clarifies the issue. Actually, I was looking for biographical info on 19th century French scientists and not to download an article. Unfortunately, reading is equivalent to downloading and the article is protected by copyright. — Ineuw talk 16:34, 16 December 2011 (UTC)
Many of your fellow Wikimedians have JSTOR access through their university or place of work. If there's a specific article you want, I suggest you tell us which one, and probably someone will be able to access it for you. Hesperian 01:23, 17 December 2011 (UTC)
Thanks for the kind offer.— Ineuw talk 02:25, 17 December 2011 (UTC)

Fragmented segments in ABBYY Finereader

Does anybody know why the OCR software Finereader (version 10) sometimes splits a text column into many small fragments, as in the two lower left columns here? It correctly recognizes the other columns/segments on the same page. Is this something that can be controlled by settings or options to the program? Is it different in version 11? --LA2 (talk) 11:34, 18 December 2011 (UTC)

More on sidenotes

Hi, the previous discussion above on sidenotes added with me noting a helpful example by T. Mazzei which appears here and looks like this (a narrow left margin with a short note parallel to the appropriate line):

...that any two opinions could exist upon the subject; and yet the historical facts, upon which alone all parties must rely, although well authenticated and comparatively recent, have not been understood by all men alike. Our author was well aware of the importance of settling this question at the threshold of his work. Many of the powers which have been claimed for the federal government, by the political party to which he [ *10 ] *belongs, depend upon a denial of that separate existence, and separate sovereignty and independence, which the opposing party has uniformly claimed for the States. It is, therefore, highly important to the correct settlement of this controversy, that we should ascertain the precise political condition of the several colonies prior to the revolution. This will enable us to determine how far our author has done justice to his subject, ...

I have been able to replicate this with margins on either side of various sizes. But I do not understand the code well enough to do more complicated things, and would be grateful to anyone who could help on a technical level. In particular, there are two features that would be valuable:

  • How do you position a note in the left margin, not at the left side of the left margin but rather adjacent to the text itself (i.e. on the right side of the left margin)?
  • How do you cause two short sidenotes (perhaps just a single word or number each) to appear one after another in the margin, instead of colliding with each other as occurs in this example:
...that any two opinions could exist upon the subject; and yet the historical facts, upon which alone all parties must rely, although well authenticated and comparatively recent, have not been understood by all men alike. Our author was well aware of the importance of settling this question at the threshold of his work. Many of the powers which have been claimed for the federal government, by the political party to [fulleft ]*which [right ]*he [left ]*belongs, depend upon a denial of that separate existence, and separate sovereignty and independence, which the opposing party has uniformly claimed for the States. It is, therefore, highly important to the correct settlement of this controversy, that we should ascertain the precise political condition of the several colonies prior to the revolution. This will enable us to determine how far our author has done justice to his subject, ...

Is it possible to achieve those two behaviors? Dovi (talk) 15:49, 22 December 2011 (UTC)

The Iliad translated by Pope (1909)

Could someone please upload and set up this book: http://www.archive.org/details/iliadofhomertran00homeuoft for me ASAP? - Tannertsf (talk) 17:40, 23 December 2011 (UTC)

I do it at once, with great pleasure. --Zyephyrus (talk) 20:48, 23 December 2011 (UTC)
Done. Here it is. --Zyephyrus (talk) 21:08, 23 December 2011 (UTC)

Could someone help with getting transclusion and DJVU page link stuff correct. I am about ready to pull my hair out working on this. - Tannertsf (talk) 11:41, 24 December 2011 (UTC)

If it is the TOC page you are talking about, I made some work. Take a look if you like it. One feedback IMHO: that page was not ready to be marked as proofread, that's misleading as people will assume a certain quality. And one suggestion, IMHO as well: better to name chapters with generic names (Book x, Chapter x, or something like this). That is very generic, spelling-error-proof, etc.. Now every link is based on the whole sub-title and if there is a spelling error somewhere, proper fixing would require to modify many things. Hope I helped. --Mpaa (talk) 14:01, 24 December 2011 (UTC)
