We may summarize the ME. peculiarities which occur in our text in the following tables. (The references will be found under the paragraphs devoted to the various sounds and forms–f. i. for OE. æ cf. § 3, for dative plural in -a of the masculine stems in o cf. § 38, etc.)

Phonetics.
I. The vowels in accented syllables.

OE. æ represented by a: þas, baðe, habbe, after, ȝebarned and ȝebarnedne, hradlice, fastende, watere, braȝen.

OE. «unfast» i repres. by u: smure and smura, herþbuliȝes, hure. Add fuþer-fæte.
