Portal:Bengali language and literature
Appearance
Bengali is an Indic language of the Indo-Iranian branch of the Indo-European language family. It has evolved from Vedic Sanskrit through the Māgadhī-Apabhraṁśa-Abahaṭṭha system of eastern Indian vernaculars. Bengali script has developed from the Proto-Bengali or Siddhamātṛikā script, an evolved form of the Siddhaṁ script. The history of Bengali literature can be traced from the eleventh century, the earliest specimen being the Charyāpada. Bengali is the national language of Bangladesh and has status of official language in the Indian states of West Bengal, Tripura and Assam as well as the union territory of Andaman & Nicobar Islands. Speaker-wise, Bengali is the seventh language of the world.
