Manual of NZ Flora
[edit]Thank you for having a go at this. You didn't exactly pick the easiest of texts to work on for a first try! I've made a few changes and validated the page. Most of my changes are about consistency with the way the other pages have been done. I have a thing about spacing around em-dash and en-dash. An em-dash never has spaces, while an en-dash does sometimes. w:WP:STYLE#Dashes has a full explanation. The end of the page is a bit fiddly. The {{nop}} template is to force an end of paragraph when the page gets transcluded to the mainspace. If it isn't there the system assumes that the next page is a continuation of the paragraph. Because the smaller text is continued on the next page instead of using {{smaller block}} I've used {{smaller block/s}} & {{smaller block/e}}. This is to do with the alignment of the pages when they are transcluded. Have a look at the documentation for {{smaller block}} for an explanation of how and when to use the two different varieties. A poem on two pages
[edit]Perhaps you'll understand this helppage : http://en.wikisource.org/wiki/Help:Page_breaks When a poem is on two pages I have to use something with start and end. But in this help page it looks like its has to come in the footer and the header.I tried several things which didn't work. Do you understand this? - Sorry girl, I think this is beyond my knowledge. Just drop the question in the scriptorium! And I am of course very curious to hear how this has to be handled. Dick Bos (talk) 07:24, 7 February 2012 (UTC)
- I've had a go at the two pages. See if what I've done makes sense. If it doesn't come back to me and I'll have a go at explaining. Beeswaxcandle (talk) 07:42, 7 February 2012 (UTC)
- To me it's clear. You treat it more or less like a table that is spread over more than one page. We'll see if it is clear to Wilma (WeeJeeVee) as well. Thank you, Beeswaxcandle. Dick Bos (talk) 07:54, 7 February 2012 (UTC)
- I didn't try it this way. But its clear to me as well! Thanks WeeJeeVee (talk) 19:40, 7 February 2012 (UTC)

Re: PSM font size correction
[edit]Hi. This is in reply to your inquiry posted in the PSM project talk page about the font size for block of texts with reduced font size. Admittedly, I was wrong, and Mpaa and I have worked out the solution and I/we will standardize and correct past edits. FYI, you can read about this HERE. Again, I apologize for the error. — Ineuw talk 04:10, 26 April 2012 (UTC)

Hello. Pardon the last-minute thought, but as I had it since you'd replied I thought I'd better send you a pointer here. To repeat the basic issue, if you are prepared to put up with the "cost" of having ragged right edges to the row of dots, setting |col3-width=auto
continually adjusts the page-number column width of {{dotted TOC page listing}} to try to accommodate whatever width is required. Obviously there are limits! Upon further thought, I am not sure why this is not the default choice, instead of that measly 2.0em. AuFCL (talk) 00:16, 9 February 2014 (UTC)
Wikisource meetup at Wikimania 2014
[edit]Wikimania 2014 will be held in London this August and it will be a great opportunity to discuss how to use the recently created Wikisource Community User Group to coordinate and to better promote Wikisource. We would like to invite the participants of each Wikisource language community to showcase the projects has been working in the past year and, of course, learn from each other experiences. See you there? Sign up in the meeting page.

Two page poem edits
[edit](Hello, I realize there is a directly related thread above, but decided to raise a new thread on it. Feel free to merge these if appropriate for your talk page.) I noticed your edits on some pages of Index:Songs of the Workers 15th Edition.djvu, putting the poem tags on poems that span across page breaks into the header and footer fields. I agree that this makes sense, but unfortunately it does not work. I've filed a bug over this, which you can see examples of this on the test wiki. I added the hidden comments because I had already noticed that the poem should simply wrap, but can't, but also because the hidden comments mysteriously fix some other line-wrap related problem that inserts or removes line breaks where they oughtn't. For an example of your edits: first page, second page, broken result. djr13 (talk) 22:19, 6 November 2014 (UTC)
New Proposal Notification - Replacement of common main-space header template
[edit]Announcing the listing of a new formal proposal recently added to the Scriptorium community-discussion page, Proposals section, titled:
The proposal entails the replacement of the current Header template familiar to most with a structurally redesigned new Header template. Replacement is a needed first step in series of steps needed to properly address the long time deficiencies behind several issues as well as enhance our mobile device presence.
There should be no significant operational or visual differences between the existing and proposed Header templates under normal usage (i.e. Desktop view). The change is entirely structural -- moving away from the existing HTML all Table make-up to an all Div[ision] based one.
Please examine the testcases where the current template is compared to the proposed replacement. Don't forget to also check Mobile Mode from the testcases page -- which is where the differences between current header template & proposed header template will be hard to miss.
For those who are concerned over the possible impact replacement might have on specific works, you can test the replacement on your own by entering edit mode, substituting the header tag {{header
with {{header/sandbox
and then previewing the work with the change in place. Saving the page with the change in place should not be needed but if you opt to save the page instead of just previewing it, please remember to revert the change soon after your done inspecting the results.
Your questions or comments are welcomed. At the same time I personally urge participants to support this proposed change. -- George Orwell III (talk) 02:04, 13 January 2015 (UTC)
Dutch wikisource
[edit]As more experienced user of how to import a book and the OCR. I was wondering if you could help with introducing these pages on the dutch ws? https://nl.wikisource.org/wiki/Overleg_auteur:William_Shakespeare . It might be already enough if you can help me and show me the link on this ws on how to import them. 83.134.87.29 14:29, 25 February 2015 (UTC)
Interwiki links
[edit]Hi, I noticed that you reversed the interwiki links deleted from Author:Joseph Dalton Hooker. These are handled through Wikidata now (as they are on other wikis) so are not needed anymore. You'll note that the page doesn't look any different, but it's now much easier to make changes in the future, if needed. I removed them when I deleted the vandalism. Just wanted to let you know. Cheers! The Haz talk 13:30, 2 April 2015 (UTC)
Updated scripts
[edit]Hello Dick Bos. I updated your proofreading scripts to the latest version from Wikisource:TemplateScript. This adds a new Special:TemplateScript page to configure your scripts, and enables compatibility with upcoming features. You were previously using only the 'clean up OCR' script; you can disable the other scripts via Special:TemplateScript if you don't need them. Let me know if anything breaks. :) —Pathoschild 03:17, 25 October 2015 (UTC)
Help decide the future of Wikimania
[edit]The Wikimedia Foundation is currently running a consultation on the value and planning process of Wikimania, and is open until 18 January 2016. The goals are to (1) build a shared understanding of the value of Wikimania to help guide conference planning and evaluation, and (2) gather broad community input on what new form(s) Wikimania could take (starting in 2018).
After reviewing the consultation, we'd like to hear your feedback on on this survey.
In addition, feel free to share any personal experiences you have had at at a Wikimedia movement conference, including Wikimania. We plan to compile and share back outcomes from this consultation in February.
With thanks,
I JethroBT (WMF) (talk), from Community Resources 22:01, 12 January 2016 (UTC)

spans and divs
[edit]Hi. Where you are formatting text across a couple of lines encompassing hard returns, the formatting should be with a "size block" template (div), eg. {{larger block}} rather than a "size" template (span) (eg. {{larger}}. Mediawiki is changing rendering tools, and we are needing to fix the old formatting which hasn't been done according to the rules of html. For info there is, and has been, stuff in WS:S about lint filters, and the like in the Tech News announcements. — billinghurst sDrewth 00:15, 8 May 2018 (UTC)

Making for ugly author pages
[edit]Hi. Something like Author:William Aitcheson Haswell is hard on the eyeballs, author pages are listings not extensive biographical find-alls. These pages are meant to be ready references and helpful, not hard work.
Things to note, {{ext scan link}} takes multiple parameter, so you can simply link them as a string, and we just need the best copy to be linked, and the source of the link is not pertinent. I don't think that we need OCLC data, how does it help? {{cite book}} doesn't make sense on our author pages as adding the author when it is there page is of no additional value and we want the focus on the work name anyway. — billinghurst sDrewth 22:23, 7 August 2019 (UTC)
- PS. We can utilise the author_talk pages, for collection of additional information. That is often done for the biographical information, and the like when they are not suitably notable for Wikipedias. — billinghurst sDrewth 22:32, 7 August 2019 (UTC)
- @User:billinghurst. Thanks for your critical comments. I have put a part of the bibliographical information on Wikipedia (incl. oclc). I have put a part of the double links on the talk page. I'll check later which online version has the best quality (or if they are perhaps the same). I don't agree with you on using cite book-templates and on the exact place for a link to a review. But we'll leave those things for a later discussion, if you don't mind.
- I'll clean up Author:Thomas Jeffery Parker in the same way, soon. Many greetings, --Dick Bos (talk) 10:20, 8 August 2019 (UTC)
- "Works about" sections are used extensively for biographical, reviews, and targets for letters. We stray away from active references as they are confusing and generally don't work. — billinghurst sDrewth 14:33, 8 August 2019 (UTC)

A Short History of the Bearded Titmouse
[edit]Hello. Thanks very much for working on The Zoologist/4th series, vol 4 (1900)/Issue 710/A Short History of the Bearded Titmouse, Gurney 1900. However, I have reverted its adding among the New Texts as premature, as it has not been fully proofread yet. Once it is finished, it can be reintroduced there again. --Jan Kameníček (talk) 13:19, 22 January 2020 (UTC)
- @Jan Kameníček Stupid me - proofread done! (Now wait for someone who wants to validate....) --Dick Bos (talk) 11:19, 29 January 2020 (UTC)
DO you transclude?
[edit]Hi, I noticed you have validated some pages on Selborne. I’m not up to transcluding atm, but with the images recently added, it is ready to do. Would you be willing? Cheers, Zoeannl (talk) 04:24, 2 May 2020 (UTC)
Works as subpages to parent
[edit]Hi. Wondering why the journal articles like this are being reproduced as subpages to the journal themselves, which is typically how we have been doing journal articles. That also allows for a more uniform citing of the works on the author pages using {{article link}} or a crafted versions that we can set up from that template for a per journal usage. — billinghurst sDrewth 02:28, 15 May 2020 (UTC)
Generally links to Page: namespace are discouraged
[edit]Hi. We generally discourage random links to page namespace that people blindly follow and end up in the back end of a work getting one thing, whilst expecting something else. Traditionally those links to page ns, are via page numbering in the left of works, or via Index: pages rather than from author pages. — billinghurst sDrewth 01:08, 17 February 2021 (UTC)
Hi. The general philosophy of WS has been to link to works in the main namespace, and not to point people to pages in Page: ns which just confuses the general user. We would normally do something like I have done like this change. — billinghurst sDrewth 07:31, 31 March 2021 (UTC)
- Oh, I have said this before. Oops. — billinghurst sDrewth 07:36, 31 March 2021 (UTC)

The Zoologist
[edit]It is an amazing amount of work you have done on these articles, I've been dipping into some of the volumes for a quick read. CYGNIS INSIGNIS 17:10, 18 April 2021 (UTC)
- @User:Cygnis insignis, Thank you for your kind words. I myself have the feeling that I've only made a start, until now. There are still a lot of volumes waiting! But most of the time this is content, that interests me. I learn a lot about the history of birdwatching (and other branches of zoology) in the UK. That makes it a nice job to do. On the Dutch Wikisource we're working on some projects that are more or less comparable, like s:nl:Album der Natuur, a magazine on nature-related subjects, with 54 volumes and s:nl:Index:Ornithologia Neerlandica 1.djvu, with good quality images, like this one (also five volumes!) Again, thanks for your friendly support. I keep going, every day a little bit. --Dick Bos (talk) 17:26, 18 April 2021 (UTC)
- Very nice, just the sort of thing I am interested in. Why are those swans white, is there something wrong with them? CYGNIS INSIGNIS 17:36, 18 April 2021 (UTC)
Pages, breaks and alignment
[edit]Hi! Good work on Karl Marx: The Man and His Work! Just a few notes about some things:
- Please avoid
{{Page:...}}
in favour of<pages .../>
for "normal" texts. The latter has special server-side code and also allows the page number links to appear. You can use<pages index="..." include=42 />
to transclude a single page. - {{page break}} or {{padded page break}} should be used rather than {{rule}} to split up "separate" pages that are transcluded to the same mainspace page. This is because they signify to paginated devices link e-readers that there is a page break there and the following content will be on a new page.
- Using {{gap}} for alignment in a block will go badly wrong when the page is narrow relative to the font size. See Help:Preparing_for_export#Avoid_fixed_indenting for an example. It's better to just use {{center}} and {{right}} in this case and set a width on the container. This will then display more or less as you expect on all displays.
Cheers, Inductiveload—talk/contribs 02:52, 29 July 2021 (UTC)
quick question
[edit]Why do we have {{Aut}} that replicates {{small-caps}} / {{sc}}, would you mind if we merged into the original template? Replicating existing templates, especially undocumented templates, just causes confusion. — billinghurst sDrewth 09:58, 27 September 2021 (UTC)
- @User:Billinghurst. Not a problem. I just copied it from (English) Wikipedia. It is also used on other Wiki's (like the Dutch). But if I'm the only one who uses it, of course I don't mind merging. Greetings. --Dick Bos (talk) 10:05, 27 September 2021 (UTC)
Ending subpages with author surname
[edit]Please do not end subpage names with the author's surname, as has been done at The Zoologist/4th series, vol 5 (1901)/Issue 724/Early Ornithologists, Macpherson for example. The title should be The Zoologist/4th series, vol 5 (1901)/Issue 724/Early Ornithologists. Thank you. PseudoSkull (talk) 14:09, 1 March 2022 (UTC)
messing around with "your" page
[edit]I have been messing around with commons:Category:Bird Watching (Selous 1901) and it spilled into Bird Watching here. You made the index for this pagelist, so it might be "yours". Even if it isn't "yours" could you just be the expert and say yay or nay to what I have done and will do. I liked the pagelist that you did more than the newer version.
Things that you might care about (or that I should undo) include:
- The link to {{illustrator}}
- I put the plate artist as "|related_author" in the header and mentioned that Rackham only did the chapter decorations. So, this book doesn't use the illustrator template any longer. It was nice to learn from your example that the illustrator template accepts more than one name! If you wish it to remain linked to the template, my changes can be undone.
- Endpapers
- Endpapers are interesting. You have one done, and it should be a good place to show the endpaper trick that Billinghurst wrote when I complained about a change, but the other one needs to be finished.
- Haddon Hall Library series additions
- I added some of the pages that were with the first publication.
- The endpapers
- The whole collection used the same endpapers, as much as I can tell. I was going to put one set of endpapers on each member of the series. But, if you get yours working, we can use them as a clever example of includeonly, noinclude to make pages that work as expected on "Page:" and on "Main".
- Cover
- of this is blue, yet the series was "first published" with a green cover. I have made a cheesy cover graphic that also contains the title of the book. The cover image goes into "|cover" on the header and does not get displayed on the page. It is there for ereader thumbnails. I want to put the green cover in that spot.
- Shared images
- I haven't done any of this yet, but the books have some shared chapter decorations and the same front page building engraving. What are your feelings about sharing the same title page picture? Also, share the same chapter decorations, if they were shared?
- About "cover="
- Putting something into "cover=" in the header puts the book into a category in which it is really easy to see if it is using {{dtpl}}, which I love, btw. I have a script that will replace that with the {{TOC begin}}/end dotted templates, which is better for everyone, but harder to wrangle from the outset. This is mentioned so that it will not be a surprise, and if you need to keep it like it is, let me know.
- Why?
- dtpl starts a whole new table for each entry. It is the same as using {{rh}}, only rh is better because it doesn't draw the dots. ereaders have small memories 6G and such, not sure of the processor speed.... But using dtpl means it can be easily converted, and the conversion maintains the dots!
Sorry it is a lot of reading. I don't know how much you care about these things. For sure it was great to find the bird images already in their species cats!! If it was plants, I would be putting them into the species gallery with a link to the book. Stream a little wikidata species ids on those images....--RaboKarbakian (talk) 20:22, 27 September 2022 (UTC)
Quotation marks in Max Havelaar
[edit]Hello! Thank you so much for taking the time to validate some of the text of the Havelaar translation.
As you may have noticed, it is currently transcribed with curly quotation marks.
Since these are used throughout the whole work, and this is mentioned in the discussion page, would you mind terribly leaving them intact?
You may also wish to see what I have responded to you on my Dutch talk page.
Kind regards, Raketsla (talk) 09:23, 19 December 2022 (UTC)
@User:Raketsla. Sorry. I thought I left them as they were. But I mostly use "clean up ocr" as a more or less automatic move before publishing, and perhaps on one or two places I may have forgotten to check. Sorry for that. By the way, that's exactly the reason why straight marks are recommended here. Greetz, --Dick Bos (talk) 09:57, 19 December 2022 (UTC)
No worries! It’s not a big deal, anyhow :)
And I see… I will have to consider that next time I start a transcription!
(By the way, I thought reading the preface was so interesting! Of course, I knew a lot of it from back in school, and from modern prefaces, but it is still something different to read about the book’s reception from an old, contemporary source, right?)
Kind regards, Raketsla (talk) 10:12, 19 December 2022 (UTC)
