Copyright tags

As I have visited Help:Copyright tags, shall we tag all pages eventually?

About copyright tagging, I'm of the opinion that not everything needs one. Anything that would be classified as "PD-old," "PD-old-70," or "PD-US," I don't see why it would need to have a tag. Now, things that are public domain because they're works of a government or things published under the GFDL, I would say need tags. Of course, I'm not going to stop anyone from tagging all the pages if he or she wants to.—Zhaladshar ^(Talk) 13:48, 19 September 2005 (UTC)

Protection Requests

Hi Jusjih, Thanks for protecting the 2 speeches. On the copyright status we've discussed this on the Scriptorium and taken the view that copyright issues don't prevent us hosting publicly made political speeches (as the whole point of these speeches is to disseminate the speakers views). I'm not sure what you're asking? I don't see any conflict between not taking fair use & non-commercial licences & hosting of political speeches. In the link above I'd argued that speeches were fair use & defended keeping fair use documents because I thought otherwise we'd have to delete the speeches but the consensus is that they're not fair use and we don't need to delete them. Jusjih, I can't comment on whether UN resolutions are fair use or not as I don't know anything about this issue. We decided political speeches weren't fair use but a seperate case with their own special circumstances. I don't know how for this would transfer over to UN resolutions, I'd suggest you raise the issue on the Scriptorium. By the way I don't know what you're talking about regarding Wolfman raising this issue as he hasn't made an edit on wikisource since December 2005. AllanHainey 07:33, 18 April 2006 (UTC)

Congrats on the Commons Adminship

I just happened to find a problem (copyright) at commons today. I nominated commons:Category:Snodgrass for deletion, it is related to Insects, Their Ways and Means of Living. I couldn't find the instructions for copyright problems so it isn't tagged. In fact I am not sure all the images are from that book but at least half of them are. Patrolled edits

Hi Jusjih,

I want to point to your attention that since we have patrolled edits enabled on this wiki and because you're an admin here, you can select under "preferences" > "editing" to mark your changes as patrolled. That way, any edits you make will not have the red "!" by them. Rule of shorter term essay

I just wanted to say that I appreciate your work on the the rule of the shorter term issue. I think the petition is the right idea. Many of our lawmakers, if they are anything like us, probably don't know much about copyright law. They might not realize how frustrating it is. That is to say I think many would be very simpathetic to the idea that you are proposing. I will say though, that I found the essay to be somewhat cryptic, a bit difficult to glean the thesis. This is, of course, a product of the confusing nature of the issue discussed. Nonetheless I think if you can tighten up the organization around the thesis you'll get alot more wiki-people to sign on. PD-old-70

Dear Jusjih,

Regarding the use of the {PD-old-70} template:

For all works published in the 20th century before 1923 it may be helpful to explain to users that the work is no longer under copyright in the U.S; hence the first sentence of the pd-1923 form.

For works published in the 20th century before 1923 and whose author died after 1936, it may be helpful to explain to users that the "70-years after the author's death" may not apply in non-U.S. countries (due to the rule of the shorter term); hence the second sentence of the pd-1923 form.

For works published in the 20th century before 1923 and whose author died before 1936, it may be helpful to explain to users that "70-years after the author's death" now applies to all the author's works; hence the use of the pd-old-70 form.

Therefore, in the second case of the second condition, two templates may be helpful to explain the law concerning its copyright.

The natural place to do this is on the author page, where the works are collected together as a unit, and the copyright conditions can be stated once instead of, as would sometimes have to happen, adding two templates to every work.

I admit that there should be some exceptions to this rule. For example if there is no author page or if the date of the author's death is unknown.

But what I said is why I think that in general the use of the {PD-old-70} and {PD-1923} templates should be discouraged on "works" pages.

Since you are concerned about the increase of pages without categories, I will begin adding a Date category (like [category:1909 works]) to the pages where I remove the PD-old-70 category. I had been adding the date of publication as I went already, but left it to others to add that article to the date category.

I hope this note addresses your concerns in the matter. If not, please leave another note on my user page.

License templates

Hi, Jusjih,

I noticed you've been adding license tags to author pages. I was wondering if instead of adding the "author-" prefix to the templates (e.g., {{author-PD-old}} and {{author-PD-old-70}}), you could just leave the "author-" part off? We've redone those templates to use ParserFunctions, so {{PD-old}} and {{PD-old-70}} will detect which namespace the page is it's being placed on, and will give a message depending on whether it is an Author page or an actual work.

The auto detection seems to be on. I will keep testing shorter entries without prefixing "Author-". However, as Chinese Wikisource has not the same thing and I have been busy at English Wikiquote and am now running for admin there, I did not know the improvement here. I agree we're probably going to want to put them back on their own sub-pages, but the table route simply didn't seem to be working, and a simple -04- appearing in a table cell wasn't amenable to telling what assembly/date/resolutions the reader was looking for. I'm not sure of what you mean about redirects, I just want to follow the WS: style as much as possible for "container" pages that sort actual source texts, rather than being source texts themselves. Hey, I noticed from WS:Admins that you're the only one here who speaks Mandarin, I wondered if you could translate a short blurb for me? If it's too long, even just translating the first two sentences would be enough to get a stub started :)

Omar Khadr (born September 19, 1986) is the fourth child in the Canadian Khadr family. He was captured at the age of 15 by American forces in Afghanistan following a July 2002 firefight in which an American Special Forces soldier was killed.

The only Western citizen remaining in Guantanamo, Khadr is unique in that Canada has refused to seek extradition or repatriation despite the urgings of Amnesty International.

He has been held in Guantanamo Bay for the past six years, and is currently awaiting a military tribunal.

It is in traditional Chinese. Long before it was posted in 2007, I already posted the same Taiwanese law on Multilingual Wikisource before Chinese Wikisource was opened. You are welcome. They are disputing whether the Chinese version should be accepted. I am holding a vote to see whether to accept PD-manifesto there. Thanks, but unfortunately I do not know how to run a bot, so I manually replace tags based on which years authors died. Enacting formula

I see you have done lots of good work on RoC legal measures....I have a small question, do RoC Acts etc have an "enacting formula" - If they do, I might add it into the various Acts you have helped translate/upload. I started doing some of these even before English and Chinese Wikisources broke away from the multilingual portal. Unfortunately I have stopped bothering with these English translations for some time as many governmental translations have very poor quality in my eyes in the USA. Whoever translated them might not have learned English very well. As I am more active on Chinese Wikisource I am less interested in English translations of ROC and PRC laws.
