Yes, Fremantle is such a little town in wiki terms, surely we should've stumbled upon one another earlier. But hurrah to know there's another local here! Not sure what you did ...

... in the Index environment to Index:Miscellaneous Papers on Mechanical Subjects.djvu however, it was behaving weirdly when edited. Anyway, I have done a tidy up and it now shows. Tracking edits

Have a look at something Index:Picturesque_Nepal.djvu and Special:RecentChangesLinked/Index:Picturesque Nepal.djvu which is best contemporaneous to the edit period. On occasions of bothering I can record some of those stats on one of my subpages. — billinghurst sDrewth 14:49, 13 July 2011 (UTC)

Index:Base Facilities Report.djvu

Hi SamWilson.

Done the best I can validating this. Stuck on one remaining page with just too much indecipherable text to honestly validate. Current state of Page:Base Facilities Report.djvu/38 is my best guess at (some of) the missing text.

Overall note: Many (but not all) of the pages had overstruck (cancelled) SECRET classifications which I have inserted on the basis this would have been original text )always at the bottom of the page if present at all; alignment varies.)

• Please remove these if you think they are inappropriate &/or confuse things (or better yet: any thoughts as to how to represent the DECLASSIFIED overstamps?)
• Apologies for my badly-thought-out template modification and reversion. You had the style basically right, so I put in exceptions for the sections which did not fit. (Never ever thought I'd be able to use {{hanging indent|0|...}} legitimately!)

Oh, it looks great! Thank you for doing all that! The SECRET text looks fine; there's only so far we should go in duplicating the layout of the original, after all. I don't think the DECLASSIFIED needs to be there; if you want it, though, go for it (and I reckon it could just be added to the template). Or just a note at in the {{header}}. Or however you see fit. :-)

I tried to do a bit of work on the printable view, but it's tricky (as always when printing HTML) so I rather gave up.

(Oh, and in the envelope for that item in the State Library of WA there is a sheet of paper with the Wikisource logo and address of the work.  :-) I don't know anything about how it got there... hehe...)

An "Infobox"?

I've added a kind of explanation regarding the secret/overstamps in a box below the Contents per (one of) your suggestion(s). Hope this is not too wrong?

Is there anything about the provenance of the document itself which should be added to this?

Speaking of wrong: If you follow the Author link (to United States Navy) you end up here, and the first back link on that page comes back to the Base Facilities Report correctly, yet carries the date 1946, whereas the actual report states 1944.

As I am not the expert, would you mind correcting the reference. (Or was the report frozen somehow for two years? Maybe 1946 was the actual year of declassification?)

Finally, what did you have in mind regarding "the printable view"? Did you intend stringing all the pages together into a single transcluded table, as the way you've written the templates suggests that...? But then some clumsy oaf like me has probably wrecked your careful sequencing!

The infobox looks good; it could be added to the notes section of Base Facilities Report too perhaps. As for the source etc. all I have to go on is the library catalogue page [1] (to which I put a link on the talk page of the report). I'm sure an original of this report exists somewhere (in the US?) so it'd certainly be good to track that down.

I've fixed the incorrect date. And I also am no expert! Not by a long shot.  :-) So feel free to change anything to see that is wrong.

As for printing, I think it's probably not worth worrying about too much; there aren't going to be that many people wanting to print that, I wouldn't think!

Turns out Fremantle Harbour ignored the advice of one Sir John Coode, just like another site less than 10km from here. Hello.

Since the “” issue came up in relation to the above, clearly you have some interest in the work. I would appreciate your advice (if you have any) on an unrelated matter which crops up therein: On pages like this one where numbered lists cross pages, have you any technique for suppressing the continued item number hanging out in space at the top of the page and/or does its presence bother you? I simply have run out of ideas how to remove it and yet maintain the number sequence across pages (well, I don't really: I reset it to the value in the header block… [value=xx clause of <li>]) Similarly: is there a better way to do this?)

I'm not sure that it matters too much, but a solution in Javascript would be pretty simple. I can't think of another way, off the top of my head. It doesn't affect what's shown in mainspace pages. Do you think it's worth sorting out? — Sam Wilson ( Talk • Contribs ) … 03:20, 9 August 2013 (UTC)

Whilst I have no doubt you are right, a javascript approach simply did not occur to me (and I can't say I'm all that keen on a solution that does not work "by default" for the next unprepared viewer...) I don't for a moment consider this seriously, but the only "true" answer would be to put all numbers in literally as they appear on each page (and if ever one of us comes across a typesetting error this is what we'd probably end up doing anyway?)

I'm not going to worry about it further unless its bothering you. I have been as careful as I can (intent may not match cold hard reality, of course: please fix if you spot any error!) to make the transcluded case do the right thing in any case. MODCHK (talk) 04:26, 9 August 2013 (UTC)

Automated import of openly licensed scholarly articles

Hello Samwilson,

We are putting together a proposal about the automated import of openly licensed scholarly articles, and since you are an active Wikisourceror, we'd appreciate yourcomments on the Scriptorium. For convenience, I'm copying our proposal here:

The idea of systematically importing openly licensed scholarly articles into Wikisource has popped up from time to time. For instance, it formed the core of WikiProject Academic Papers and is mentioned in the Wikisource vision. However, the Wikiproject relied on human power, never reached its full potential, and eventually became inactive. The vision has yet to materialise.

We plan to bridge the gap through automation. We are a subset of WikiProject Open Access (user:Daniel Mietchen, user:Maximilanklein, user:MattSenate), and we have funding from the Open Society Foundations via Wikimedia Deutschland to demo suitable workflows at Wikimania (see project page).

Specifically, we plan to import Open Access journal articles into Wikisource when they are cited on Wikipedia. The import would be performed by a group of bots intended to make reference handling more interoperable across Wikimedia sites. Their main tasks are:

• (on Wikipedia) signalling which references are openly licensed, and link them to the full text on Wikisource, the media on Commons and the metadata on Wikidata;
• (on Commons) importing images and other media associated with the source article;
• (on Wikisource) importing the full text of the source article and embedding the media in there;
• (on Wikidata) handling the metadata associated with the source article, and signalling that the full text is on Wikisource and the media on Commons.

These Open Access imports on Wikisource will be linked to and from other Wikimedia sister sites. Our first priority though will be linking from English Wikipedia, focusing on the most cited Open Access papers, and the top-100 medical articles.

In order to move forward with this, we need

• General community approval
• Community feedback on workflows and scrutiny on our test imports in specific.
• Bot permission. For more technical information read our bot spec on Github.

I found some time today to fix it, among some others. I split the family tree to its own subpage, and added it into chapter run. The page itself took most of the allowance for post-include size. alt+x

Hello, Sam. When you are editing and come to the bottom of a page that is when you hit the Alt and X keys at the same time. Then show "Preview" and if all looks good "Save" the page. You don't have to have it as a gadget. It works without being a gadget but perhaps someone added it as a gadget in which case you would go to preferences, gadget, and look there to see if it is there as a gadget. Sometimes the text is "sticky" so you have to use "Show Preview" more than once. I started using alt+x years ago. Beeswaxcandle told me about it. Hidden cats

Saw your recent "forcing" of hidden cats via your .css file and thought you should know there is already a setting to show them in your User Preferences --> Appearance tab --> Advanced Options section -- I suggest you use that pref. setting instead.

Meh! No need to be sorry, reasonable to think that it would. Been there done that previously and head-butted the extension. Two useful though problematic tags are <poem> and <ref> they refuse to play nicely. Sam, I think it might make a difference. The watchpage shows a large change and those like myself who look at it may think, "Oh, my word! I don't want to validate his work see how much was marked incorrect!" while not looking at the specific removal of smallrefs. In this it is possible it may keep other possible validators away. I will get back to validating your pages soon, very soon. Tomorrow at some point I have to be away for a few hours. I return favors and can do a lot on your pages. Yes, that's a point. It wasn't far when I was in the United States Navy on a ship traveling around the world with a bunk and free food. But there are sharks all around that place, all around the Great Barrier Reef. I don't know what good a shark is but I wish they didn't exist. I would not trust a plane due to terrorists and tourist ships are top heavy in high seas. We should have been paid extra for flight school and submarine service on our ("tin can") destroyer in high seas. We were often underwater and bobbed our way back to the surface. Help:Beginner's guide to typography -- extra line breaks in OCR text

I'm working on "Life among the Apaches" https://en.wikisource.org/wiki/Index:Life_among_the_Apaches.djvu. All of the pages have a bunch of manual line breaks based on the original page size. I've been manually deleting each one. It's arduous, especially since they're invisible. How can I get rid of all the line breaks -- then I'll add back the ones really needed to separate the paragraphs? No worries @Outlier59: :) yeah, it's all pretty complicated sometimes. Once you've got things set up though, proofreading is pretty easy... I've had various bits set up for years, and rather forget how I went about them in the first place.

Basically, you need to:

1. Copy this text: mw.loader.load('//en.wikisource.org/w/index.php?title=MediaWiki:TemplateScript/proofreading.js&action=raw&ctype=text/javascript');
2. Go to User:Outlier59/common.js (you're the only one allowed to edit that page by the way)
3. Paste the text on its own line, and save.

Then you should have the tool appear in the sidebar when you're proofreading a page.

Updated scripts

Hello Samwilson. I updated your proofreading scripts to the latest version from Wikisource:TemplateScript. This adds a new Special:TemplateScript page to configure your scripts, and enables compatibility with upcoming features. You previously only had the 'clean up OCR' script; you can disable the other scripts via Special:TemplateScript if you don't need them. Let me know if anything breaks. :)

However I noticed you had a custom toolbar button which called the OCR cleanup script. That no longer works because the individual scripts aren't accessible anymore. How useful was the button for you? I could figure out some way to make the scripts compatible with it if you really need it... —Pathoschild 00:36, 01 November 2015 (UTC)

I moved the cleanuppage button to the toolbar because I've got things set up to not show the sidebar at all when I'm editing in the page NS (becuase I'm often on a tiny laptop screen and want as much width as possible). Hi. Just tidying up at WD and as part of that I saw this work here and in its current condition. Is this maybe something that should be deleted until it is a little further along the track?
