John Joseph Burke (1868-1939) worked as a salesman, florist, and a chef in New Jersey. Josephine Veronica Burke, called him "Black Jack Burke" and said "the only things he could do well, were [to] drink and dance". After the death of his first wife, his daughter was raised by his wife's sister. After his second marriage and additional children, the new girls were raised by his sister. He and his new wife raised the boys. He has been described by Thomas Patrick Norton (1920-2011) as a "ne'er do well". (b. April 1870; Jersey City, Hudson County, New Jersey, USA - d. - Death of his daughter. "Mrs. Mary Burke Norton, 59, of 603 Garfield Avenue, died yesterday at the Medical Center of a ruptured appendix. She was admitted to the hospital August 31. Mrs. Norton, a communicant of Sacred Heart Roman Catholic Church, is survived by her husband, Thomas P. Norton, Sr., and three sons, Thomas; Vincent and James Norton."

- His death. "John J. Burke, Sr., 73, of 740 Grand Street, died yesterday at the Medical Center following a brief illness. He was a lifelong resident of Jersey City. He was a communicant of St. Patrick's Roman Catholic Church, and a member of its Holy Name Society. He was a former employee of Peter Henderson, florist. Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Josephine Burke; three sons, William, John and Owen Burke, and four daughters, Mrs. Mary Norton and the Misses Bertha, Josephine, and Margaret Burke and a sister, Mrs. Mary Patterson."
