Young India
[edit]Hello, Today is the Birth anniversary of vetran freedom fighter Lala Lajpat Rai. I am happy to say that I have finished proof-reading his book Young India on English Wikisource. However, I require some help with the appendix and also since this is my first book, there could be few mistakes. I will be happy in correcting those however would request someone to validate the same for me. Thanks. --Abhinav619 (talk) 04:47, 28 January 2019 (UTC)

Djvu manipulation...
[edit]Index:Ruffhead - The Statutes at Large - vol 8.djvu -
I found that Archive.org had done a rescan, such that the missing page IS present as a JP2 file, as I indicate, any possibility you would be able to take the JP2 file linked (and possibly one more before it), and patch it into the Djvu file, such that the text layer doesn't mis-align? I appreciate I'll have to update the page list when the file is updated.
Index:Ruffhead - The Statutes at Large - vol 6.djvu - This needs 1 placeholders inserting after djvu page 7
Thanks. ShakespeareFan00 (talk) 02:01, 31 January 2019 (UTC)
- @ShakespeareFan00: -- Both files fixed. Hrishikes (talk) 04:57, 31 January 2019 (UTC)
Thanks for the update but I found another issue. namely the inserted Schedules after pp652,
The Order should be 652, A, (blank) , B , (blank), 653 based on the page footers.
Would it be possible to swap the relevant pages for Schedule A and B over in the scans, and remove the duplicate scans for Schedule A?
I don't mind about loosing the pages at the very end of the file, so those can be speedy deleted during the re-alignments.. ShakespeareFan00 (talk) 20:27, 3 February 2019 (UTC)
- @ShakespeareFan00: -- Done -- Hrishikes (talk) 04:57, 4 February 2019 (UTC)
Not your fault but in places a possible PDF->DJVU conversion has degraded the scan quality compared to the JP2 view on the IA view which I was using as a check for certain words and names.
IA doesn't seem to have a DJVU for this work.. Only a PDF.
The file can still be transcribed but generation of a higher quality scan (with equivalent layout) would be desirable if anyone was offering.. ShakespeareFan00 (talk) 17:23, 7 February 2019 (UTC)
- @ShakespeareFan00: -- I have increased the resolution of the djvu file. Please check. Hrishikes (talk) 14:13, 8 February 2019 (UTC)
- That's exactly what I was looking for thanks.. See also - https://tools.wmflabs.org/ia-upload/log/peerageofbritish00westrich, which appeared to be a single volume version , directly from the JP2 at IA . If it's now a duplicate, it isn't an issue if it gets deleted. ShakespeareFan00 (talk) 14:17, 8 February 2019 (UTC)
- One issue I have noted is "u" vs "n" in the DJVU images, which means I'm still checking against the IA direct scans. 20:50, 8 February 2019 (UTC)
- I have kept the resolution at 300 dpi. The file is already big (> 100mb). Hrishikes (talk) 14:09, 9 February 2019 (UTC)

Sanskrit
[edit]Are you skilled in the reading and typing of Sanskrit (in Devanagari)? I'm looking for someone to help with the proofreading of a Sanskrit-English edition of the Bhagavad Gita. There is base text available at the Sanskrit Wikisource, but there are some obvious differences in the Sanskrit text. Although I can spot such differences, I do not have the skill to correct them. --EncycloPetey (talk) 17:24, 17 April 2019 (UTC)
- @EncycloPetey: — Yes. If you point out the pages where correction is needed, I'll have a go. Done this page. Hrishikes (talk) 01:27, 18 April 2019 (UTC)
Index:Bhagavad Gita - Annie Besant 4th edition.djvu is the index page. User:BethNaught has been adding the works of Annie Besant, and I recommended she do this one, as it will give us a scan-backed English translation of the Bhagavad Gita, and especially because the translation has praise from native Indians. I recommended that she pull the text from sa:WS as a basis, but there are differences between this edition and the text at sa:WS that need to be hammered out for proofreading.
BethNaught has crafted a script that will allow her to add the pages with formatting. If you can proofread the Sanskrit behind her as she works, that would be great. But thanks for anything you can do. --EncycloPetey (talk) 03:45, 18 April 2019 (UTC)
- @EncycloPetey: — I can proofread it, no problem. But first, I need to clear the style issues. A blank line is used between two lines of Sanskrit verse, and space is used before punctuation marks (।, ॥). This is somewhat unconventional in enWS, I think. Should we stick to this special style? Hrishikes (talk) 04:34, 18 April 2019 (UTC)
- The spaces are present in the work, and are clearly intentional. We are trying to match the original Sanskrit as closely as possible. It's poetry, printed in couplets mostly, and I chose to recommend a blank line between them so that the spacing would match both with and without the additional centered line above that occasionally appears. If you think it's an issue, and recommend using <br /> instead, I'd make that suggestion to @BethNaught: on her talk page. There is already a thread there about this work. I suggest posting any discussion about style there so that it's all in one place. BethNaught is really in the driver's seat on this work. --EncycloPetey (talk) 04:44, 18 April 2019 (UTC)
Thank you for helping out! I just have a question—I saw that here you removed an {{hwe}} template, but the word still appears correctly when transcluded—how does this work? Since when has this been possible? BethNaught (talk) 07:11, 21 April 2019 (UTC)
- @BethNaught: See Wikisource:Scriptorium/Archives/2018-09#Words_hyphenated_across_pages_in_Wikisource_are_now_joined -- Hrishikes (talk) 08:07, 21 April 2019 (UTC)
- @BethNaught: Reg. Page:Bhagavad Gita - Annie Besant 4th edition.djvu/88. Your original rendering at the end of verse 8 was स्वपन् श्वसन् (sleeping, breathing), as it should be. But the scan shows श्वसन् स्वपन् (breathing, sleeping), so I have changed it accordingly. The English translation is "sleeping, breathing", which shows that the Sanskrit rendering is wrong. It is merely a matter of word position, so I'll leave to you (as the primary editor), whether SIC template is indicated or not. Hrishikes (talk) 07:12, 2 May 2019 (UTC)
- Yes, since the Sanskrit printing is erroneous, I think {{SIC}} should be used. Thank you for pointing this out! Could I ask you to add it, with the words the correct way round in the tooltip? Since I have no knowledge of Sanskrit I'd only need you to check it anyway... BethNaught (talk) 19:08, 5 May 2019 (UTC)

I'm looking at Discourse 13, and I'm worried because the Sanskrit in the scan and on sa.ws looks very different. Please could you compare and see what's going on?
Thank you for your continued work on this :) BethNaught (talk) 13:05, 1 January 2020 (UTC)
- @BethNaught: -- saWS starts with verse 2 of our scan. Our verse 1 is not there. Hrishikes (talk) 14:58, 1 January 2020 (UTC)
@BethNaught: -- Please have a look at Page:Bhagavad Gita - Annie Besant 4th edition.djvu/177. The quote from Sanjaya was a four-liner in the scan, which was proofread as a two-liner because the English translation is continuous, without line-break. But the problem is the scan's strict adherence to Sanskrit grammar. In Sanskrit, if a word ends with म् (m) and the next word starts with a consonant, the म् becomes ं (ng, overdot). In the Sanjaya quote, the third line of the scan ends in कृष्णम्. The next word starts with a स (sa), which is a consonant; so if the lines are joined up, कृष्णम् should become कृष्णं, which was what you had originally copied from saWS. There are many other such examples. What to do? Hrishikes (talk) 02:47, 3 January 2020 (UTC)
- The reason I have been combining four-line verses translated as prose is that you did it here. I don't feel like I can offer a useful opinion without knowing more about Sanskrit/Devanagari/this specific work:
- Why are some verses written in four lines, not two?
- Do the extra line breaks have poetic significance? (I would guess not as you have removed them in some cases?)
- Does a line break prevent the change you mentioned where म् becomes ं?
- BethNaught (talk) 10:58, 3 January 2020 (UTC)
- @BethNaught: -- The verses are in w:Shloka form, which can be written as either four-liners or two-liners. Usually these are written as two-liners. But the point I was making was this: if म् is at the end of the line, then it cannot be followed by another word. If lines are joined, then only it can be followed by a consonant. At least our scan treats the matter like that; this scan is not considering one half-verse, split into two lines, as one entity. Therefore, if we combine lines, and keep the म्, in the eyes of a Sanskrit-knowing reader, it will appear as non-grammatical. If we combine the lines and also convert म् to ं, it will be against the display of the scan. Therefore, after giving the matter some thought, it seems to me that the four-liners should not be converted to two-liners, irrespective of whether the English is prose or verse, at least where the first or third line ends with म्. I would be happy to know your thoughts on this. Hrishikes (talk) 12:14, 3 January 2020 (UTC)
- Thanks for the explanation. I agree we don't want ungrammatical Sanskrit, and we shouldn't change the spelling of the scan. I would definitely be happy with not converting four-liners to two-liners. However, in my opinion, if we're going to have both kinds, we should always follow how the scan does it. BethNaught (talk) 14:18, 3 January 2020 (UTC)

I ran across this (which you uploaded and created the index for) while working the backlogs of scans with various issues and found the OCR text layer was pretty awful. There's a much better scan at IA: akbarriseofmugha00mallrich, but I'm not certain it is a sufficiently similar edition. This one is from 1896 (vs. 1904) and says it's the "fifth thousand" (vs. "eight thousand"), but whether that's indicating a printing or something else is unclear to me. Could you take a look? If it's an acceptable substitute, IA has a DjVu, or I can generate a new one from the scan images, that we can upload over the existing one. --Xover (talk) 08:19, 15 September 2019 (UTC)
- @Xover: -- I think later edition is supposed to be more updated, so would be better. I have never bothered with presence or lack of ocr layer. Currently I am working on a work without ocr layer, without any problem. Anyway, if somebody wants to work on this work, he can get the ocr by the Google option or I can add the ocr text, better than the one now present. Djvu being low resolution, ocr is not coming up properly. When I get some time, I'll download the pdf from IA, do the ocr by ABBYY and add the ocr text here. Hrishikes (talk) 08:35, 16 September 2019 (UTC)
- Meh. I now notice I never really followed up on this. The context was really the backlog in Category:Index - Text Layer Requested, where Index:Akbar and the Rise of the Mughal Empire.djvu shows up because back in 2015 you marked it as needing OCR. If the current text layer in the file is sufficient, could we mark the file as ready for proofreading instead? Again, I'm mainly trying to clear out the backlog there. --Xover (talk) 08:38, 23 October 2019 (UTC)

Question
[edit]Hi Hrishikes. I hope, you are doing well. I wanted to ask one thing to you. These two books from Internet Archives are in public domain, because its authors died 60+ years ago. These two book are a reprints of original books. Both are mirror copy of original book (except cover, title page and bibliographical details). My question is that: Can I upload these two reprinted books on Commons for Wikisource ? Thanks. --Gazal world (talk) 21:32, 20 September 2019 (UTC)
- @Gazal world: — Reprints are ok if originals are both PD-US and PD-source country. Cover is copyrightable. Title page is ok, if there is no illustration or logo. Not sure about bibliography. Hrishikes (talk) 16:05, 23 September 2019 (UTC)
- Hi Hrishikeah. Both books are in PD-US and PD-India. There is no logo on title page. By "Bibliographical details", I meant the details printed behind the title page. So as you said, there are no problem with copyrights, except cover page. Please check cover pages of both book. There is no any artistic work on it. Can I include cover pages also? Thanks. --Gazal world (talk) 16:14, 23 September 2019 (UTC)
- @Gazal world: -- Sorry for late answer. I was in a net-less place. Publisher's logo is present in the colophon page of Milestones In Gujarati Literature and pages vi & vii are missing. Anyway, you can upload; if objection is raised with any page, the file can be re-uploaded after blanking out that page. Hrishikes (talk) 14:07, 3 October 2019 (UTC)

Indic
[edit]Hi, I noticed you were bilingual and hoped you could spend a bit of time helping to trim down the 84 entries at Category:Pages with missing Indic characters, thanks! Lemuritus (talk) 04:59, 24 December 2019 (UTC)
Lang block
[edit]The changes I made should not have had ANY impact on one-line vs two line.
Unless it's to do with named parameters vs un-named paramaeters. One keeps line-feeds, the other doesn't. ShakespeareFan00 (talk) 11:31, 19 May 2020 (UTC)
- And based on a re-apllied test, that proved to exactly what was going on. Named "language" paramater vs unamed "1" paramater. Confusing. (sigh) ShakespeareFan00 (talk) 11:38, 19 May 2020 (UTC)

Statutes...
[edit]Index talk:The Public General Statutes of the United Kingdom 1896 (59 & 60 Victoria).pdf
Also noting a few of the ex-Google PDF's that have page numbering/scan issues. ShakespeareFan00 (talk) 12:35, 19 October 2020 (UTC)
- @ShakespeareFan00: -- Yes, the 1896 djvu volume seems to be the same as the pdf volume. I missed it, obviously. It is maintained as an isolated volume, not as part of a series, and not mentioned in Parliament portal or other such portals. Anyway, its presence indicates that the pdf volume is deletable.
- As for the file fixing issues, if you mention the errors specifically, I can attempt a fixing, as you well know from our previous interactions. Hrishikes (talk) 12:53, 19 October 2020 (UTC)
- I Will be looking into this later in the week.. ShakespeareFan00 (talk) 13:00, 19 October 2020 (UTC)
- @ShakespeareFan00: -- Fixed 1845 and 1847 volumes. Page 852 of the 1845 volume has compound page number, no missing page there. What's the issue with 1805 and 1882? Hrishikes (talk) 03:45, 20 October 2020 (UTC)
- 1882 concerns noted..
- https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Statutes_at_Large - Any chance of finding the earlier Pickering Volumes (to act as comparison edition against Ruffhead's?) . Ruffhead's Edition was continued by Runnington as well, but I haven't yet found those volumes.
- Also noted Statutes of the Realm a while back, but I can't at present find a good scan for these that isn't encumbered. ShakespeareFan00 (talk) 09:30, 20 October 2020 (UTC)
- @ShakespeareFan00: -- Which years do you want, of Pickering, Runnington, or Statutes of the Realm? Hrishikes (talk) 09:41, 20 October 2020 (UTC)
- I have intentionally avoided the long-range volumes, having Acts of 10 years or likewise, because Acts, or sections thereof, of the initial years got repealed by the time of publication, and those Acts/sections were not reproduced. So I have gone for the contemporary volumes, to avoid the repeal effect. Hrishikes (talk) 09:48, 20 October 2020 (UTC)
- Most of this is very very long term, there's no need to upload it immediately. Ideally as many years as possible, but if you have time the inital focus should perhaps be:
- The continuation volumes of Ruffhead,(by Runnington up) to the 1790's., because the Sttautes passed post 1800's are in the volumes you or others have already uploaded.
- For Pickering, it would be the volumes from the 1760's to 1790's, as they cover the gap between the end of Ruffhead's edition (on Wikisource/Commons) and the volume's of Pickering already uploaded. (Pickering's initial volumes are contemporanous with Ruffhead's.)
- Statutes of the Realm, is a fixed set of 9 volumes published between 1810-1825, Hathi has the modern printing from the mid 1960's (but that's not usable for Commons/Wikisource). Ideally having all 9 volumes on commons would be very good, but I've only found a poor quality scans of part of Volume 4 on Google Books. ShakespeareFan00 (talk) 10:11, 20 October 2020 (UTC)
- From the mid 1800's it seems the "Public General Statutes" series covers most of it. I note you've managed by careful searches/uploads to extend this to 1901 at present. Do you plan to extend this all the way to 1991? (which is when the legislation.gov.uk collection was initially computerised. ( Until 1991, I think there were 'official' print editions published, some of which (pre 1970) may have an expired crown copyright by now) (Aside: As well as the actual statutes, I think there were later editions of the Chronological Table than the 1870's era version Wikisource currently has.
- If someone was really bored, cross referencing the "Chronological Table of the Statues", with the various printed Statute Collections would be worthwhile, but probably needs a subject expert. ShakespeareFan00 (talk) 10:11, 20 October 2020 (UTC)
- We need a better source than the IA (ex Google Scans), I've found the ones here have NUMEROUS issues, and as such I would consider rejecting the ENTIRE set, as 'bad' ShakespeareFan00 (talk) 22:42, 20 October 2020 (UTC)
- Checking the scans directly at Google Books though, suggests the IA process screwed up... You might want to look into importing the PDF's from Google directly. ShakespeareFan00 (talk) 23:14, 20 October 2020 (UTC)
Statutes (Ongoing)
[edit]Thanks for the inputs at Commons. If others at Commons agree with the logic you expressed about the 1802 scans then the same library collection at Archive.org, has quite a lot of 'official' papers as well. ShakespeareFan00 (talk) 09:12, 21 October 2020 (UTC)
- I'm continuing with page checking. In most instances I've marked items for source repair, because I was finding many duplicate pages, or out or order duplciations, These can i think be solved using the methods I detailed previously ( I.E grabbing the relevant PDF directly from Google vs the IA copy attributes to tpb). I note some of the updated versions at Google seem to have a different cover sheet now, suggesting to me that they were also updated after the IA "mirroring" ShakespeareFan00 (talk) 09:12, 21 October 2020 (UTC)
- @ShakespeareFan00: -- Fixed 1868-9, 1867-8 and 1811 volumes. Hrishikes (talk) 07:29, 22 October 2020 (UTC)
- I've checked the 1805 PDF, against the scans at Google, The Googe PDF so far seems to have all the relevant pages, but has a number of duplicated page numbers in the scans. Would suggest finding someone to 'rebuild' it page by page. You've already acted in considerable good faith.
ShakespeareFan00 (talk) 08:09, 23 October 2020 (UTC)
- @ShakespeareFan00: -- The scan here is from Google. Has plenty of duplicates and missing blanks. I am rebuilding it. Hrishikes (talk) 08:37, 23 October 2020 (UTC)
- Thanks for the rebuilds, At least this work has the bottom of page continuations, that allow you to do the rebuilding and check for missing pages ( An old printing/proofreading technique, remaining useful in the digital era :) ).
- The 1805 volume text looks very simmilar to the style used on some actual printing of Acts of that period, (Given that they might be the same printer, I'm not surprised.). You may be able to patch any genuinely missing pages from copies of the Acts themselves ( the original frames for this I think being from where this collected edition was perhaps imprinted (albeit with different page numbering, compared to the Acts themselves.)
- Please note I am also attempting to pagelist other years, but was going to take a break to let you catch up... BTW If you can't find a page (such as from alternate editions), please put an obvious " I am missing!" placeholder in the PDF. I've noted in places in the PDF's I've looked at that for some reasons 'random' pages have been used as placeholders by a third party :(.
- Also on a PDF I checked this morning, there seems to be some bad clip/view boxes issues I'm not sure if this is easily reapaired.
- And thank you for your considerable efforts with this. Do we have a barnstar ewquivalent on Wikisource?
ShakespeareFan00 (talk) 10:28, 23 October 2020 (UTC)

Statutes of the Realm
[edit]I think this is what you are looking for : https://catalog.hathitrust.org/Record/012297566 That's the full set :) (albiet the 1963 reprint (all from UPenn Library.) . My thought is that's the Volume set should be on Commons. Don't worry about the volumes already uploaded being duplicated though :). ShakespeareFan00 (talk) 09:28, 21 October 2020 (UTC)
Scan quality...
[edit]The issue with poor scan quality on some PDF has already been raised on Phabriactor:
https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T256848 https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T257025
Your input on those tickets as to possible causes. The PDF should be reasonable for the Statutes of the Realm, because the Scans are perfectly readable in the Hathi interface. The problem arises with the generated thumbnails locally, (and to a lesser extent with PDF.js in browser). A PDF file is reasonably standard so I don't immediately see why this should be. ( I've had this issue with some of the early volumes of the Catalog of Copyright Entries.) ShakespeareFan00 (talk) 16:05, 21 October 2020 (UTC)
- @ShakespeareFan00: -- I am not having problems with pdfs at present. In the past I had encountered display problem, which I had repaired. As for scan quality, one just needs to upload a file with good quality. See the size of c:File:The Statutes of the Realm Vol 1 (1101-1377).pdf now. Hopefully there will be no issue with scan quality of this file, but people's computers may crash due to the size (although, not my computer). Hrishikes (talk) 18:37, 21 October 2020 (UTC)
- @ShakespeareFan00: -- Is there continuing problems with 1814 and 1823? Also, please specify the defects of Runnington 11. Hrishikes (talk) 12:07, 28 October 2020 (UTC)
- Runnington 11 , doesn't have missing pages. The issue was an out of order folio (ie 2 pages), which may have taken place during the scanning process.
- 1814 and 1823 appear to be fixed in terms of having a complete set of pages. If I find more clipped pages over time I'll mark them in the way I had been. ShakespeareFan00 (talk) 12:16, 28 October 2020 (UTC)
- Thank you very much for your efforts on this. ShakespeareFan00 (talk) 12:33, 28 October 2020 (UTC)

- @ShakespeareFan00: -- Can you please check Modern Review 15 and 16? I have plans to proofread a Tagore novel from there. And what is the issue with vol 22 (1917)? And with UK Statutes 1847? Hrishikes (talk) 04:27, 16 November 2020 (UTC)
- 1847 is good now - Thanks for the patch... Check 1825? I found 2 missing pages on a rescheck.. ShakespeareFan00 (talk) 22:47, 17 November 2020 (UTC)
- Will look into the other Index's you mention , unless I've already taken a look at them. The issue I found with the Modern Review was that some pages appear to be lensed as in the image is 'distorted' around a circular region in the image, making it harder to OCR. I think the page list is complete though. ShakespeareFan00 (talk) 22:47, 17 November 2020 (UTC)
Irish statutes collection:-
[edit]A 12 volume set of "Statutes at Large" for Ireland" :- https://catalog.hathitrust.org/Record/009014360
which covers the period from Edward the Third up to 1800. ShakespeareFan00 (talk) 16:14, 25 October 2020 (UTC)
- @ShakespeareFan00: -- I am aware about those things. Currently busy with fixing defective files, and my ongoing project in Wikidata (https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q3633281 -- I am creating items for every central Act of India, along with detailed data). Fixed 1814, 1816, 1819. I think pages 777-784 are not really absent in 1819; that is misprinting of page numbers. 776 ends with Navy Agents, and 785 starts with Navy Prize Orders. In-between pages, all of them, could not have dealt with Navy only. Hrishikes (talk) 16:48, 26 October 2020 (UTC)
- Well, The ultimate goal of creating of a "Chronological Table of Central Acts of India." is a very good aim. I would assume you are planning on following a similar approach to that used in the UK? ShakespeareFan00 (talk) 19:40, 26 October 2020 (UTC)
- One aim also being to allow third parties to generate their own "Table of Effects", in the way Law Reports and published editions do? ShakespeareFan00 (talk) 19:49, 26 October 2020 (UTC)
- Award yourself a barnstar :) ShakespeareFan00 (talk) 19:49, 26 October 2020 (UTC)
- @ShakespeareFan00: -- Ha ha! What I am doing with Indian Acts is not at all available on British Acts, anywhere on the net. In the item of every Act, I am including: 1. Acts amended or repealed by this Act; 2. Acts this Act amends or repeals; 3. Whether the Act got completely or partially nullified by the Supreme Court, with link to judgement from Supreme Court site; 4. Date of assent; 5. Link to Gazette of India for full official text of the Act; 6. Link to Bombay High Court site if Act not available in Gazette site; 7. Effective date (date of commencement), with link to Gazette notification (multiple notifications, in case of multiple effective dates for different sections); 8. If the Act causes some organisation to be created, list of such organisations, with link to separate notifications for such creation, issued under the Act; 9. Any other important information about the Act (e.g., whether created under some international treaty, whether there were great protests against the Act, etc.). I have already completed amendments of the Constitution, and Constitution Orders issued by the President. Do you have this kind of data under one umbrella about British Acts? If you want to know the date of commencement of a random British Act, even of recent years, can you get the info. about the date and also the link to the concerned notification immediately? There are wrong data (including commencement date) about Indian Acts, even in Govt. sites like India Code. So I have included authentic data only, linked to authentic references. Hrishikes (talk) 03:41, 27 October 2020 (UTC)
- For British legislation the datataset concerned would be that held by legislation.gov.uk, in terms of the 'effects' listed for each of the Acts it holds. ( which doesn't necessarily include information for Acts repealed in full prior to 1991, when the dataset was created initially.). There may be some XML feeds, but I'm not sure. ShakespeareFan00 (talk) 04:17, 27 October 2020 (UTC)
- There's also the "Chronological Table of The Statutes" (published in print form until at least 1991), and various publications like "Is it in Force?" and Halsbury published by third party legal publishers. I'm not sure if there's one dataset that is license compatibel with Wikidata though.
ShakespeareFan00 (talk) 04:20, 27 October 2020 (UTC)
- @ShakespeareFan00: -- Wherefrom are you getting the idea of license? No license is required. For the data entered, you can link to external "dataset" as reference. License not required for citation. Data itself is not copyrightable, vide Article 5 of the WIPO Copyright Treaty. Hrishikes (talk) 05:12, 27 October 2020 (UTC)
- UK has the concept of 'database right' , which in practice means you can't just copy an entire dataset (unless it's already under an open license , like Open Government License for legislation.gov.uk). Commerical law reports would have their own copyrights.ShakespeareFan00 (talk) 09:46, 27 October 2020 (UTC)
- @ShakespeareFan00: -- Your concept of "database right" is wrong. It does not refer to right over the data, but the selection and arrangement of data. And this is very much valid in UK, because the WIPO Copyright Treaty has come into force there on March 24, 2010, see at https://www.wipo.int/treaties/en/notifications/wct/treaty_wct_76.html. Arrangement of data in WD is of course different, being spread over so many items. Hrishikes (talk) 13:38, 27 October 2020 (UTC)

Feedback on Benefits Forgot (newbie!)
[edit]Hi Hrishikes, I have just started contributing to Wikisource. I am new to Wikisource, but have been around on other projects for about five years. I have gone through the help pages and tried to understand the basics. I started off with proofreading the book - Index:Honore Willsie--Benefits Forgot.djvu, and proofread three pages and the cover page. I would like to have your feedback on the work that I have done until now, and also would love reach back to you as I progress to complete proofreading the book - please let me know! I have specific doubts regarding pages I have proofread, as following:
- Page:Honore Willsie--Benefits Forgot.djvu/1
- I have recreated an SVG, uploaded it to Wikimedia Commons, and used it here - is that fine? The image file is at c:File:Abraham Lincoln illustration from Benefits Forgot.svg, also please check the licensing of the file.
- Is the right way to do cover pages? Anything to be changed/improved?
- Page:Honore Willsie--Benefits Forgot.djvu/15
- I have again recreated the image, and used it here - c:File:The_Donation_Party_from_Benefits_Forgot.png. I am not sure what size should be used for the image.
- Is it the right way to use
template, for space before paras?
- Page:Honore Willsie--Benefits Forgot.djvu/16 - I have used
for the word "calculatin" - but not sure if it is right. I read the template is used for misspelled words, but about words they may be previously in use in English, but got deprecated overtime. Any suggestions on how to confirm that?
- There are a lot of empty pages in the book, as you can see from the Index page (example: Page:Honore_Willsie--Benefits_Forgot.djvu/6) - what should be done to these pages?
These are all the specific questions from my side, please point out any other mistakes I might have made and things I should be careful about. Thanks in advice. KCVelaga (talk) 07:07, 27 October 2020 (UTC)
- @KCVelaga: -- Hearty welcome to this site! My feedbacks as under:
- Page 1: Normally the cover is treated here as an image, e.g., Page:Relocating Bakhtin.pdf/1. However, your page is ok. Some background and font coloring would be good. Spelling of the author's name is HONORÉ, not HONORE.
- Page 15: The image is not ok. You have removed the background, but the result on the image is not good. Simply turning it into B&W, without removing background, would give better result. Use {{di}} on the first word. Here we don't do paragraph indenting, so no {{gap}}.
- Page 16: Don't use {{SIC}}. It is not a typo, just the then usage. Keep it as is.
- Save empty pages as "without text".
- Regards, Hrishikes (talk) 13:26, 27 October 2020 (UTC)
- @Hrishikes: Thanks a lot for the feedback. I will get back to the cover page, toc, and similar intial pages, after I finish proofreading the main part.I have restored background, and removed gap templates. Also, please look at the licensing of the image on WCommons, if that is the right way or not. A new question I have is, the size of the rule in header and footer - in the book covers entire of length of the text, if you see a page, is that okay, or should it be increased across the length. I have proofread a couple of more pages (page 18, page 19 - there is a special block, which I am not sure if I did it right), please check and let me know if everything is fine. If so, I will go ahead with the entire book. KCVelaga (talk) 11:23, 3 November 2020 (UTC)
- @KCVelaga: -- The image should have the same license as the work. I have uploaded a new B&W version as c:File:The Donation Party from Benefits Forgot.jpg. As for rule and special block, see my edits on page 18. Hrishikes (talk) 13:38, 3 November 2020 (UTC)

(1) Chronological Table of Indian Statutes...and (2) Text of British Acts from 1900-2015 onward)
[edit]Item1 At the base of this list:- https://statutes.org.uk/site/collections/international/india/
there is a 1911 publication containing a table of Statutes with 'force' in India to 1911, As Wikisource has a reasonably complete run of Central Acts, subsequently to this, it should aid your efforts to compiling a new edition at Wikidata :)
I also note some other titles for the author https://archive.org/search.php?query=creator%3A%22Wigley%2C+F.+G.%22 , I don't have any biographical data for the author at present. ShakespeareFan00 (talk) 13:24, 27 October 2020 (UTC)
Item2
https://statutes.org.uk/site/bibliographies-british-statutes/ links to http://www.matthewlippoldwilliams.com/data-sets/ which has a set of text covering a number of British Acts for the period (1900-2015)! (Aside.. Any general act after 1988 will be on legislation.gov.uk though.) The text is raw (and no scan) but it may be useful for research purposes. It might be worth asking the academic concerned what his sources were :) . ShakespeareFan00 (talk) 13:29, 27 October 2020 (UTC)
- @ShakespeareFan00: -- Have you looked into my work in WD? Have a look into the items of individual Acts of 2020, 2019, 2018. Then you will understand. I am not depending on what some book says or what some website says. For every piece of data, I am using the original Govt. notification as reference. Because I have seen plenty of mistakes even in esteemed publications and websites. Therefore I am creating a new dataset in Wikidata. Have a look and you will realise. Therefore, I am not going to depend on what legislative.gov.uk or statutes.org.uk says. I'll get the info from there, then I'll read all of those Acts to see whether they were applicable to India, which exact sections and if there were separate notifications for Indian application, when those Acts got amended/repealed in India etc. Then, from WD items, I'll link the data with text of the actual Acts, British and Indian. For example, see the field "foundational text" at d:Q100285747. Also see the reference of dissolved/abolished/demolished at d:Q5472937. Hrishikes (talk) 13:51, 27 October 2020 (UTC)
- Okay. Sorry.. Looks like you are compiling your own table :) As I said previously a barnstar is in order :) ShakespeareFan00 (talk) 14:26, 27 October 2020 (UTC)
- You earlier asked what gives effective dates for UK statutes/General Acts. It depends... Generally my understanding is that a UK act is law when it gets Royal Assent (this being if i recall correctly the date under the long title on the 'Queens Printer' printed version), unless the text of the Act says otherwise. Some sections of more recent Acts may not come into force, until there is a Commencement order ( typically as 'secondary legislation' or Statuatory instrument/Rules). My recall is that these are typically under titles "[X] Act [YYYY] ( Section [N] ) Commencement Order [YYYY]". Some legislation is noted in "The Gazzette - https://www.thegazette.co.uk. (https://www.thegazette.co.uk/all-notices/notice?text=&categorycode=G403000003¬icetypes=&location-postcode-1=&location-distance-1=1&location-local-authority-1=&numberOfLocationSearches=1&start-publish-date=&end-publish-date=&edition=&london-issue=&edinburgh-issue=&belfast-issue=&sort-by=oldest-date&results-page-size=10). Does that information help you in respect to British legislation? ShakespeareFan00 (talk) 14:26, 27 October 2020 (UTC)
- In respect to earlier items, you'd have to read the issues for the relevant period directly, as I'm not sure the notice are fully indexed in the way contemporary notices are. ShakespeareFan00 (talk) 14:37, 27 October 2020 (UTC)
- @ShakespeareFan00: -- Yes, it will help a lot. Thanks. So, you are saying that the date of assent is effective date if the date is not provided for in the Act. Same is the case for India's central Acts; but for State Acts, it is the date of publication in the State Gazette. Do you have a reference for it? For example, see the reference for effective date at d:Q94249913. What is the UK equivalent for this? Section 4 of w:Interpretation Act 1978? Hrishikes (talk) 14:40, 27 October 2020 (UTC)
- @ShakespeareFan00: -- I have gone through your UK Gazette link. That is about the date of assent. This is not required for WD items, because the date of assent is always mentioned in the Act. I was talking about the date of commencement. When the Act says that commencement will be notified later, then how do you get the date? Is there any existing dataset about this? In case of Indian Acts, the commencement date can be found in India Code and also elsewhere. Then I just have to search the Gazette site for notifications before and on that date, and usually I can get the notification. How to do this for UK Acts? Hrishikes (talk) 15:08, 27 October 2020 (UTC)

- (https://www.legislation.gov.uk/ukpga/1978/30/section/4 Intrepretation Act) seems to say the 'in force' date is equivalent to the Assent date unless other provision is made in the relevant Act or Statute. Other than that, I don't know what the situation is. I am not aware of a central dataset other than third-party legal publications such as "Is it in Force?" (which only goes back to 1960). Sorry I can't be more help.ShakespeareFan00 (talk) 15:23, 27 October 2020 (UTC)

East India Company. ...
[edit]- Much of what would be considered historic British legislation relating to India, is for the period covered by Ruffhead/Runnington most likely to be under the heading "(Dutch) East India Company" in Ruffhead or Runnington's indicies. I think the transfer from the East India Company control to British control is c. 1833? I have no idea where you'd find the original charters for the East India Company, or it's internal regulations though. ShakespeareFan00 (talk) 12:33, 28 October 2020 (UTC)

[edit]Thank you for the help rendered to Telugu wikisource. {{Indic missing}}
[edit]Hi. as you seem to have some expertise with Indian and South Asian languages, I was wondering if when you had a spare moment, you could look into the uses of this template with a view to dispersing the relevant items to more specific "problematic language character" categories. {{Hindi missing}} was created recently, with this in mind.
My other question would be, based on other Wikisources usage and likely incidence in older works, which other South Asian languages are likely to need their own templates? ShakespeareFan00 (talk) 22:34, 8 July 2021 (UTC)
- @ShakespeareFan00: -- Bengali, Sanskrit, Telugu, Urdu and Tamil templates are already present. Marathi, Odia, Assamese, Gujarati, Kannada and Malayalam can be added. Hrishikes (talk) 15:28, 10 July 2021 (UTC)
Index:Letters from India Vol 2.djvu
[edit]Hello. The Index:Letters from India Vol 2.djvu has been suggested for speedy deletion with the rationale that the file is broken. How we will see unregistered users
[edit]Hi!
You get this message because you are an admin on a Wikimedia wiki.
When someone edits a Wikimedia wiki without being logged in today, we show their IP address. As you may already know, we will not be able to do this in the future. This is a decision by the Wikimedia Foundation Legal department, because norms and regulations for privacy online have changed.
Instead of the IP we will show a masked identity. You as an admin will still be able to access the IP. There will also be a new user right for those who need to see the full IPs of unregistered users to fight vandalism, harassment and spam without being admins. Patrollers will also see part of the IP even without this user right. We are also working on better tools to help.
If you have not seen it before, you can read more on Meta. If you want to make sure you don’t miss technical changes on the Wikimedia wikis, you can subscribe to the weekly technical newsletter.
We have two suggested ways this identity could work. We would appreciate your feedback on which way you think would work best for you and your wiki, now and in the future. You can let us know on the talk page. You can write in your language. The suggestions were posted in October and we will decide after 17 January.
Thank you. /Johan (WMF)

Author:Frederick William Read
[edit]I don't think that is the same guy.
The link from worldcat was a redirect to this but viaf and ULAN don't agree yet. Frederick William Read is an author, F. W. Read is an illustrator. There are two separate viaf for this, and I think there are two people for it and that worldcat was wrong. I did not look at your link.
One of the reasons that I think this is that Frederick has authored stuff about logistics and large scale growing, but F. W. illustrated children's literature and is a painter.
I am going to paste this on the back of the author page.--RaboKarbakian (talk) 19:44, 5 January 2022 (UTC)

New Statutes volumes
[edit]You mentioned in my deletion discussion for the Indian public laws volumes that you created the recent Statutes volumes from whole cloth—volumes 126 on, in specific. Would you mind replacing those volumes with the official ones from here? Or at least, could you create vol. 128, it has a law I want to proofread. Thank you. TE(æ)A,ea. (talk) 01:52, 26 December 2023 (UTC)
- I created vol 132, not 128. I uploaded 128 as received from mentioned source. Hrishikes (talk) 13:30, 26 December 2023 (UTC)
- @TE(æ)A,ea.: -- I have replaced vols 126-131. Hrishikes (talk) 15:23, 26 December 2023 (UTC)

- Images are of very poor quality sir. Any other sources.--Rajasekhar1961 (talk) 06:30, 4 February 2024 (UTC)
- @Rajasekhar1961: -- Could not find any more. However, found another source for Vol 1: https://archive.org/details/dli.ministry.03015. You can also have a look at another set on the same subject: https://archive.org/details/dli.ministry.03014 -- Hrishikes (talk) 07:17, 4 February 2024 (UTC)
- The index page listing I could not follow. Can you check whether there are any missing pages or images. --Rajasekhar1961 (talk) 07:31, 23 February 2024 (UTC)
- @Rajasekhar1961: -- Page numbers in the scan sometimes include images and sometimes not. So it is confusing. You do the proofreading. If it appears later that some pages are missing, this work has multiple scans online, so I shall be able to get the missing pages, I believe. Hrishikes (talk) 17:46, 24 February 2024 (UTC)
